Giants choose veteran QB over exciting Draft talent

The New York franchise gave the reins of the offense to the veteran quarterback over the rookie drafted in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Update:

Brian Daboll has a clear vision for how he plans to lead the New York Giants into the 2025 NFL season. Central to that vision was selecting a quarterback who can help them win now—and another who can develop into their future. The Giants have defined those roles and placed their trust in Russell Wilson and Jaxson Dart, respectively.

Daboll kicked off training camp with a press conference, making it even clearer: while there will be competition, Russell Wilson has been the Giants’ starting quarterback since camp began. Alongside Wilson and Dart, the Giants also have Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito providing depth at the position heading into the season.

We’re going to practice. These guys are going to compete, but Russ is the starter,” Daboll said when asked whether Dart or Winston might contend for the QB1 spot.

Dart has “got a long way to go”

If that remains the case through training camp and the preseason, Wilson will open the year as the starting quarterback for the fourth different franchise in his career. After beginning his NFL journey with the Seattle Seahawks, he later had stints with the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers.

While Wilson is penciled in as the starter and Dart is expected to serve as a backup, the Giants believe the rookie has strong long-term potential. General manager Joe Schoen said the former Ole Miss quarterback is in a great position to grow.

We saw leadership, we saw arm talent, we saw athleticism—and he’s a rookie,” Schoen said. “He’s got a long way to go, but he has a very good team around him. We also have a very good coaching staff, so he’s in a good spot right now.
