Has Mike McCarthy won a Super Bowl? Steelers appoint former Dallas coach
McCarthy replaces Pittsburgh legend Mike Tomlin, who stepped down after 19 seasons in charge.
For the first time since 2007, the Pittsburgh Steelers have a new head coach.
On Saturday the team confirmed that it had a agreed to appoint Mike McCarthy as head coach, replacing long-serving Mike Tomlin in the role. Tomlin stepped down at the end of the 2025 season, ending a 19-year stint in charge.
Following McCarthy’s shock departure, the Steelers had been linked with Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver. McCarthy won out and he has the chance to reunite with Aaron Rodgers, if the veteran quarterback can be persuaded to sign with the team for another year.
McCarthy has been an NFL head coach since 2006 and has led some of the most storied franchises in NFL history. He spent 13 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, before coaching the Dallas Cowboys for five years.
McCarthy and Rodgers shared Super Bowl triumph
McCarthy is best-known for his long spell with the Green Bay Packers, leading the team to a first-placed finish in the NFC North on six occasions.
In 2008, McCarthy named a young Aaron Rodgers as the team’s starting quarterback after the retirement of Brett Favre. McCarthy and Rodgers would go on to have a wildly successful partnership, winning Super Bowl XLV with the Packers.
Although they did not win another championship during their decade together in Green Bay, Rodgers was a four-time NFL Most Valuable Player under McCarthy’s coaching.
Now 42, Rodgers’ contract with the Steelers expired at the end of the 2025 season and the team would be eager to extend his deal for another season. Bringing in McCarthy may help to convince Rodgers to stick around for one more season and to compete for a second Super Bowl triumph.
