Have you got your house party ready? Well, plenty of fans are already preparing for Super Bowl LVIII, which will be taking place on Sunday, 11 February 2024. And it’s not just because the biggest game in football will be taking place on the field; it is also about people getting together and having fun with the match itself and how it plays out.

Guessing the outcome of the game is a sport in itself, and no game is as fun as ‘football squares’ to do this. The popular game is a mix of chance and strategy that invites family and friends to root for a specific outcome of the NFL action rather than simply picking the winner.

What is and how to play football squares?

Football squares is a game of chance designed in a kind of a pool style of game. This will include everyone in the festivities, whether they like football, their team is playing, or they just came for the nachos. Here’s what you need to do:

  • You’ll need a 10x10 grid. You can draw it out or print one from the multiple sites out there. There are even online grids you can play on.
  • You’ll need an extra row, both vertically and horizontally.
  • Players will have to pick squares around the grid by putting their initials.
  • On the extra rows, you’ll need to draw random numbers for the teams from 0-9.
  • A person should be picked at random so they can also draw at random the numbers that will be assigned to the teams.
  • A winner will be chosen at the end of the first quarter, second quarter, third quarter, and fourth quarter. The winner is decided by looking at the last number of each team’s score, matching that number to a square on the grid, and seeing which square those two numbers are in.

You can also print a template off here.

How to pay out at football squares?

This depends on each group. Most commonly, each quarter winner gets about 20% of the pot, while the last quarter gets 40%, but this is not a rule but rather a personal decision.

The four best combinations in Super Bowl history:

  • 0-0: 19 times
  • 0-3: 13 times
  • 0-7: 11 times
  • 7-0: 10 times
  • 3-7: 10 times

So there you have it, the best numbers to pick when selecting your squares on the grid.
