How long does Jalen Ramsey predict he will be out for?
The Miami Dolphins were dealt a big blow in their first week of preseason when lock down defensive back Jalen Ramsey suffered a meniscus injury on his left knee.
Unfortunately in football, injuries happen. Unfortunately in preseason, injuries happen. And Unfortunately for the Miami Dolphins, their shut down corner back, Jalen Ramsey was injured on one of the first days of training camp after suffering a meniscus injury on his left knee.
Apple signed as Ramey’s replacement
The Dolphins CB had surgery on Friday, and since then the Dolphins have made arrangements to fill the void in the secondary while their star defender goes through the post-op process. Former Cincinnati Bengal CB, Eli Apple, was brought in to replace Ramsey on a one year deal, but Ramsey has told his coach and the team that he won’t be gone as long as doctors expect him to be sidelined.
There is not a definite amount of time that a meniscus operation is bound to keep a player out, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that he is likely to be out “for a few months.” Meanwhile Ian Rappaport of NFL Network gave a bit more of a specific timeline, reporting that he is expected to be out of action until December.
Ramsey is an All-Pro defender that was traded from the LA Rams to the Dolphins this offseason, and while he may not be a doctor, he has a projection for his return date. “Tell me what the timeline is and I’ll beat it by a month,” is what Ramsey told his coach, Mike McDaniel, who gave an update on his corner back in a press conference after Monday’s practice.
In the meantime, Eli Apple will likely be playing the CB1 role while rookie Cam Smith and third year corner back Noah Igbinoghene will also be looking to fill the void.
McDaniel shows faith in fill ins
“I feel good about the entire crew,” McDaniel said. “We are dealing with some injuries now in that group. But I feel very, very good about the competition there, and the guys that are ready to go see some more opportunities. There’s Pro Bowlers and hungry young guys and everything in between. So it’ll be outstanding work for us moving forward.”
McDaniels also told reporters that Ramsey is “in good spirits”, and whenever his shutdown defensive back makes his return, he will be “100% Jalen Ramsey.” Ramsey has 19 career interceptions, 452 total tackles and has been a Pro-Bowler for six straight years.
He would have come in and instantly played the role of veteran on a team that finished 27th in passing yards per game allowed. Now the Dolphins have to wait and hope that he lives up to his guarantee and comes back sooner than expected.
