The New York Jets will likely be without their second year quarterback Zach Wilson for at least the rest of the preseason, but there is still no word from the Jets on a return date.

Wilson looking for big second season

The second year quarterback took off from the pocket and scrambled right, tried to pivot and went down untouched. He would immediately exit the game, after getting up slowly and limping off the field. He was diagnosed with a meniscus injury and a bone bruise, but the Jets wanted to wait until his scheduled surgery on Tuesday to give an estimated date of return.

Last year’s second overall pick in the NFL Draft was a starter from Week 1 in his rookie year, but the beginning of his career didn’t quite go as planned. He won three of 13 games, throwing for just 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He would also miss four games in the middle of the season with a right knee injury, but his play improved drastically when he returned in Week 12.

The Jets didn’t want to jump to any conclusions about how long Wilson would be out, but for a moment after the game there was serious concern that Wilson’s season was in jeopardy.

Flacco QB1 in the meantime

Wilson had surgery on Tuesday afternoon, and doctors said the surgery was a success. Although everything went according to plan the Jets haven’t put a timeline on the starting quarterback’s return but the initial prognosis of two- to four weeks doesn’t appear to have changed.

New York’s QB1 started the first quarter of the opening preseason game a little shaky, making two of questionable decisions on his six drop backs before getting hurt. The Jets know that Wilson is the quarterback of the future, but with the injury to Wilson it will be Joe Flacco who will step in under center. If the former Baltimore quarterback comes in and performs, then Jets coach Robert Saleh will have a decision to make.

The Jets open their regular season schedule at home against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, September 11th at 1 p.m. ET.
