The Philadelphia Eagles have been the team to beat in the NFC for most of the season, and while a late run by the San Francisco 49ers may have taken everyone by surprise, there is no escaping the fact that they are the hottest team in the NFL right now.

Heading into this week’s matchup, the 49ers are on a 12-game winning streak and are relatively healthy, with minor niggles bothering Christian McCaffrey and Charles Omenihu, although both are expected to play on Sunday.

Playoff record

Two teams begin to develop bad blood when they repeatedly meet in the playoffs. The fact that these two have only met once in the post season in their history might explain the lack of any feeling of rivalry on both sides of the ball.

While both teams desperately want to win, and indeed both feel as if they can win, there is no feeling of revenge or deja-vu to be found in either camp.

The only time that they have met in a playoff game before was in the 1996 Wild Card game, when Steve Young and the 49ers shut out the Eagles 14-0 in Candlestick Park.

All-time record

Throughout regulation play, and including that one playoff meeting, these two teams have only met 35 times, with the 49ers holding the edge at 20-14-1.

They tend to face off about 4 or 5 times per decade and this will be the third time since 2020 that they have met. Who knows, if that pace keeps up, there could be a rivalry on the cards between these two? If so, we are witnessing its birth right now.
