How much did the Seattle Seahawks sell for?
The reigning Super Bowl champions are set to enter a new era after agreeing to the most expensive sale of an NFL franchise in league history.
The 2025 season will forever be remembered in Seattle. The Seahawks captured the second Lombardi Trophy in franchise history by winning Super Bowl LX, completing a remarkable turnaround that returned them to the top of the NFL.
Just as attention was shifting toward defending their championship, however, major news off the field shook the league. The Seahawks were put up for sale and are now set to change hands.
A record-breaking sale
According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, a group led by venture capitalist Vinod Khosla has reached an agreement to purchase the Seahawks. Khosla is currently a limited partner in the San Francisco 49ers and will be required to divest that stake before taking control of Seattle under NFL ownership rules.
How much is the Seahawks’ deal?
The deal is reportedly worth $9.6 billion, making it the most expensive sale of an NFL franchise ever and one of the largest transactions in the history of professional sports. It easily surpasses the previous NFL record, the Washington Commanders’ $6.05 billion sale in 2023.
A new chapter for the Super Bowl champions
If approved by at least 24 of the NFL’s 32 owners, the sale will usher in a new era for the Seahawks.
The expectation is that Seattle will retain the core of the roster that just won the Super Bowl, but the franchise will begin its title defense under a new ownership group with unprecedented financial backing.
For the reigning champions, the challenge will be not only staying on top of the NFL, but doing so under an entirely new ownership structure.
Who is Vinod Khosla?
Vinod Khosla is an Indian American billionaire entrepreneur and venture capitalist best known as a co-founder of Sun Microsystems, one of Silicon Valley’s pioneering technology companies. After leaving Sun, he founded Khosla Ventures in 2004, a venture capital firm that has backed hundreds of startups across artificial intelligence, software, healthcare and clean energy, including early investments in OpenAI.
Khosla has an estimated net worth of around $14 billion and has been a minority owner of the San Francisco 49ers. Under NFL rules, he will have to sell that stake before becoming the Seahawks’ controlling owner.
The Seahawks were previously owned by the estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who purchased the franchise in 1997. Following Allen’s death in 2018, his estate began the process of selling his sports holdings, with proceeds designated for philanthropic causes.
