Update:

The Buffalo Bills have suffered a major setback, while the New York Jets have received a timely boost, with news that star defensive tackle Ed Oliver has been ruled out of Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium (kickoff 1 p.m. ET).

Foot injury sidelines Oliver

Oliver, the ninth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, had his foot stepped on during Wednesday’s practice. By Thursday, he was seen in the locker room using a walking boot and a rolling scooter.

On Friday, head coach Sean McDermott confirmed that Oliver will miss the Week 2 AFC East showdown in East Rutherford. His absence is expected to weaken a defense that allowed 40 points in a last-minute comeback victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

Oliver was Buffalo’s standout defensive performer in the season opener, recording one sack, a forced fumble, three tackles for loss and two quarterback hits.

When will Ed Oliver return? Who will replace him against the Jets?

McDermott expressed optimism that Oliver could return for Buffalo’s Week 3 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. However, he cautioned that it was too early to set a firm timeline for the defensive tackle’s recovery.

With Oliver sidelined, rookie second-round pick T.J. Sanders is in line for an expanded role. Sanders played 16 snaps in his NFL debut against Baltimore and is expected to see significantly more action against the Jets.
