Is Jack Jones a playmaker or a liability? Breaking down new Dolphins CB’s stats
In the wake of Artie Burns’ season-ending injury, the Miami Dolphins signed cornerback Jack Jones, but will he be able to clean up his game?

The Miami Dolphins wasted little time filling the void left by Artie Burns’ season-ending ACL injury, signing former Raiders and Patriots cornerback Jack Jones on Saturday. The move comes at a time of transition for Miami’s secondary, which lost both starting cornerbacks from 2024 - Jalen Ramsey (traded) and Kendall Fuller (released) - leaving the team with a major question mark at the position.
Free-agent CB Jack Jones, who started 16 games last season for the Raiders, is signing a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins, per source.

Jack Jones: Boom or bust signing for the Dolphins?
Jones, 27, is a high-upside talent with a turbulent NFL history. He’s shown flashes of brilliance, tallying career highs last season in tackles (69), passes defended (16), and interceptions (3) with the Raiders, but those numbers come with an asterisk. According to Pro Football Focus, Jones surrendered 698 yards, nine touchdowns (among the highest totals allowed at his position), and a 108.9 passer rating when targeted, raising serious questions about his consistency and discipline in coverage.
Still, Miami sees potential. And with Cam Smith, Storm Duck, Kendall Sheffield, and Ethan Bonner currently vying for starting roles, there’s a clear opportunity for Jones to prove he can be more than just a depth signing.
The Dolphins are no strangers to taking calculated risks on talent, and head coach Mike McDaniel made it clear earlier this week that the team is “always looking to improve.” Jones fits the bill as a low-cost, high-upside gamble, one who brings both experience and urgency to a group lacking proven starters.
But for Jones to stick, he’ll need to do more than just show flashes of brilliance. His previous stints in New England and Las Vegas were also marred by off-field issues (from missing curfew to being arrested for carrying loaded guns in an airport) and on-field inconsistency. The Dolphins are betting that a fresh start and a clearer path to playing time might be exactly what he needs to lock in.
If Jones can clean up the mental mistakes and elevate his play under new defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver, he has a legitimate chance to resurrect his career in Miami. And for a Dolphins team with postseason ambitions and few answers at cornerback, that kind of bounce-back story would be a major win.
