It’s not Fields or Wilson: meet the first QB the Steelers have signed for the 2025 season

While Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson’s future with the team remains uncertain after their Wild Card loss, another QB was just added to the squad.

The Pittsburgh Steelers lost their Wild Card game against the Baltimore Ravens last week to mark their sixth straight playoff loss since 2017. When the Steelers started the season, they had Justin Fields under center, and when Russell Wilson recovered from his calf injury after six games, he replaced Fields as the starter and helped lead the team to the playoffs.

Now, both Wilson and Fields are free agents, along with third-string Kyle Allen. Wilson has made it clear he wants to return, but the Steelers have not yet negotiated a contract with him. Fields, on the other hand, may return, but not as a starter. As the third string, Allen may be the most likely to get cut. None of these quarterback’s future with the Steelers is certain at this point, but there is one whose is.

Steelers sign former Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson

The only quarterback who is currently under contract for the Steelers for the 2025 season is former Miami Dolphins quarterback Skylar Thompson, whom they just signed to their roster on Tuesday.

Thompson played college football at Kansas State for five seasons, throwing for 7,134 yards and 42 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. Now 27 years old, he was drafted to the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. In the three years he spent with the team, he played in just 10 games, including two starts, in which he went 1-2.

In his NFL career, Thompson has thrown for 721 yards and one touchdown to three interceptions. In the 2024 season, he started just one game. The Steelers signed him to a one-year, $1.1 million contract for the 2025 season.

Thompson is likely being brought on as a third-string quarterback. What’s unclear is whether they’ll be replacing Allen with him, or if Allen will stay on and become the backup to either Fields or Wilson.
