SUPER BOWL 2023

Jalen Hurts contract details: What is his salary and how many years does he have left?

Most people doubted Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts heading into the 2022 NFL season, but now that they’re in the Super Bowl, he can expect a decent raise.

When the Eagles signed quarterback Jalen Hurts in 2020, they didn’t expect him to be the starter. They selected him 53rd overall in the second round of the draft and he started as the third-string quarterback behind Nate Sudfield and Carson Wentz. He became the backup in Week 2 and then started in place of injured Wentz in Week 13.

Of course, we now know how this story ends - Hurts led the team to the playoffs, losing in the first round in 2021 and then on to the Super Bowl in 2022.

Jalen Hurts’ contract details

Back in 2020 when he first joined Philly, Hurts signed a four-year, $6,025,171 contract with the Eagles. The deal included a $1,942,944 bonus with $2,825,815 guaranteed and an average salary of $1,506,293.

In 2023, in the third season of his four-year contract, Hurts will be entering his contract year, earning a base salary of $4,303,000 and a bonus of $100,000 with a $4,789,486 salary cap. In the final season of the contract, he would become a free agent, but we all know that’s not happening. After the third year of his rookie contract, he’s available for a contract extension. If you’ve been keeping up, that’s after the Super Bowl this Sunday.

Here’s what happened with Wentz back in 2019 - he signed a four-year, $128 million contract extension following his third year in the league for an NFL record (at the time) of $107,870,683 of guarantees and $66 million fully guaranteed at signing. With the extension, Wentz became the fourth-highest-paid player by average salary at $32 million a year. There is no reason the Eagles shouldn’t do the same with Hurts, especially if they win the Super Bowl and especially especially if Hurts wins Super Bowl MVP.

According to Sportrac, Jalen Hurts’ market value is six years at around $266 million with an average salary of $44.3 million. That would put him in the same playing field as Kyler Murray, Deshaun Watson, Josh Allen, and Dak Prescott.

After last year’s big playoff loss to the Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round, the Jalen Hurts doubters were a-plenty. He quickly shut them up this season though, as he took the Eagles all the way to the big game. The Eagles went 14-1 in the regular season with Hurts as their starter this year and he was the favorite to win the MVP until he hurt his shoulder with just three weeks to go. He has been nearly flawless all season, with a 66.5% pass completion rate for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns to just six interceptions. On top of that, he had 760 yards on the ground, fourth among quarterbacks in the league, and 13 rushing touchdowns, tied for the second-most in the NFL. He was selected to his first Pro Bowl and second team All-Pro. He was second to Mahomes in voting for the AP 2022 NFL MVP.

The Eagles owner, Jeffrey Lurie, told reporters on Super Bowl LVII Opening Night that Hurts is the Eagle’s solution as a long-term quarterback and that he has “nothing to prove”. Contract negotiations are certainly on the way. Even with a Super Bowl loss, Hurts is likely looking at a significant extension, one which he can surely negotiate considering Wentz’s $230 million/$124 million guarantee.
