Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Champions 2023 live updates: Mahomes wins his 2nd championship

Update:
The Kansas City Chiefs slotted a late field goal to beat the Philadelphia Eagles and win the Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes MVP.

Super Bowl 2023: Kansas City Chiefs 38 - 35 Philadelphia Eagles final score

Chiefs defeat Eagles to win Super Bowl LVII

What a game! Both the Eagles and Chiefs played aggressive on both offense and defense. There were some questionable calls on both sides that impacted the game, but in the end, the Chiefs deserved the win.

Hurts has incredible, record-breaking first Super Bowl

Even though the Eagles didn't get the win, Jalen Hurts had an incredible first Super Bowl. In just his third year in the NFL, Hurts took his team to the final and nearly won it for them, all the while breaking records. He had one fumble, which was run back for a touchdown by Chiefs' Nick Bolton, but otherwise had a beautiful game with few errors,

Hurts broke two records, for most rushing yards and most rushing touchdowns by a QB in the Super Bowl. He finished with three rushing touchdowns, the most by any quarterback in a Super Bowl in NFL history. He broke Jim McMahon's record of two back in 1986. He finished the game with 70 rushing yards, breaking Steve McNair's previous record of 64 back in the year 2000.

Despite the loss, Hurts can expect a contract extension coming in 2024.

Mahomes wins Super Bowl MVP

Patrick Mahomes was playing with a high ankle sprain he suffered three weeks ago and though he was feeling better ahead of the game, he tweaked it again in the second quarter.

Of course, he insisted on playing through the pain and did so, coming back in the second half and leading the Chiefs on another scoring drive. He continued on and led them to victory with 21 of 27 yards, 182 yards, three touchdowns, plus six carries for 44 yards.

Mahomes won the Super Bowl MVP award, becoming the first Black quarterback to have won the Super Bowl and the first Black QB to have won the Super Bowl MVP more than once.

Butker the hero

The Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker had a doink early on in the game. If he hadn't missed that one, the Chiefs would have taken the lead over the Eagles, but instead, they didn't have the lead at all until quite late in the game.

He more than made up for that though as he kicked the game-winning field goal from 27 yards with 11 seconds left. That field goal was set up on a run by Chiefs RB Jerick McKinnon, who slid just short of the touchdown to assure that they could run the clock down just enough to not allow Philly a chance at scoring again. It was a strategic move that worked out in Kansas City's favor and ended up in their Super Bowl victory.

Rihanna announced she was pregnant, maybe?

There has been much speculation that during the halftime show, Rihanna alluded to the fact that she is pregnant. There has been no confirmation of this, but she did rub her belly in a way that pregnant women often do at a moment when she was singing the lyrics, "when you hold me, I'm alive".

Besides that possibility, it was just good to see her back on the stage again. Ri Ri was as radiant as ever and looked as comfortable on the stage as she ever has been.

Travis Kelce's words of consolation for brother Jason

For the Kelce family, there was only going to be one winner in Sunday's Super Bowl LVII. Brothers Travis and Jason Kelce were on opposing teams at State Farm Stadium and it was Travis's Kansas City Chiefs who prevailed, edging his brother Jason's Philadelphia Eagles 38-35.

Travis, who had 81 receiving yards and a touchdown, admitted afterwards that it was a strange feeling to beat his own brother's team. "There’s nothing you can really say to a loved one in a situation like that. You joke around all the time and say you want to beat your brother on the biggest stage, but it’s a weird feeling".

The two brothers gave each other a hug out on the field as the confetti flew for the Chiefs. "There’s nothing I can say to him other than I love him and he played a hell of a year, a hell of a season," Travis said in a consolation message to his brother.

Jason, who won a championship ring with the Eagles in 2018, tried to remain positive in defeat: "It's hard to get here. Obviously, we would have liked to win but I'm happy for Trav".

THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS ARE SUPER BOWL LVII CHAMPIONS!!!

as.com

What a week it has been for Patrick Mahomes, who now should be considered the best quarterback in the league.

as.com

Momma Donna got plenty of pub this week, and finished off Super Bowl Sunday with a Super hug for her son Travis.

as.com

Congratulations to all of you who bet the Gatorade bath would be Purple.

as.com

There could only be one Kelce walking off the field a winner, but the two shared a post game hug after setting history by becoming the first brothers to compete in a Super Bowl.

as.com

Harrison Butker seals the Chiefs second Super Bowl in the last four seasons with this 33 yard field goal.

as.com

Mahomes had his already injured ankle shaken up in the first half, but this 24 yard run showed what a warrior he is. Less then three minutes later, the Chiefs were kicking the game winning field goal.

as.com

Jalen Hurts tied up the game with his third rushing TD of the night and punched in the two point conversion to tied the game.

as.com

Just a few minutes later, Skyy Moore put the Chiefs up 8 with this 5 yard TD catch.

as.com

Kadarious Toney came in to Kansas City in the middle of the season and ended up giving the CHiefs their first lead of the Super Bowl with this 5 yard catch.

as.com

KC looked like a different team coming out of the break and the drove right down the field to open the third quarter with a TD.

as.com

The Eagles looked like they were going to take control of the game at the end of the first half when Hurts ran his second TD in and a field goal to end the second quarter put Philly up 10.

Mahomes Stats

Mahomes Stats

Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes' stats at the end of Super Bowl LVII, thanks to our friends over at SofaScore!

Jennifer Bubel

Nick Bolton was in the right place at the right time after watching Hurts' non contact fumble, he scooped it and scored the TD to tie the game up in the second quarter.

as.com

Jalen Hurts had a near perfect half in his Super Bowl debut and no pass was better than this 45 yard bomb to AJ brown.

as.com

Who else was Patrick Mahomes going to go to on the first TD of his night? Travis Kelce has been his favorite target and the wasted no time reminding everyone.

as.com

This game got off to a flying start as both teams came out and scored TDs to open the game. Hurts ran in the first of his three rushing TDs on the night.

as.com

That will go down as one of the best games in Super Bowl history. The finish left a bit to be desired. Take nothing away from the Chiefs, but the defensive holding flag to give the KC the first down took away from what could have been an incredible end. It could have been called, but to decide a Super Bowl on a 50/50 flag is a shame to see.

KC lare up 38-35!!!

And what of Andy Reid's time management now? I think he'll only hear praise after this one!

Jennifer Bubel

The Chiefs have a chance to take the lead with 11 second on the clock and Harrison Butker on the field with a 27 yard field goal to potentially win the Super Bowl.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

On 2nd and 1 Mahomes take a knee for a loss of 5 yards.

3rd and 6 from the PHI 7.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

The great debate

Was it smart of McKinnon to stop short of getting the touchdown so that the Chiefs could run out the clock and stop the Eagles from getting a chance to score?

If they get a field goal, most will say yes. If he misses it, well...maybe another story.

Jennifer Bubel

McKinnon took it all the way down to the 1 yard line as the Eagles were inviting him to score.

PHI take a TO with 1:36 to go.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

Mahomes was pressured and just lofted it up to Smith-Schuster and a defensive holding call will give the Chiefs a first down!!!

1st and 10 form the 10

as.com

Mahomes looks for Smith-Schuster on a screen pass but he is stopped at the line of scrimmage. PHI take a TO with 1:54 to go in the game.

3rd and 8 coming up fro the PHI 15.

as.com

Mahomes in pain

You can definitely tell Patrick Mahomes' ankle is bothering him, and yet...he just went on a 26-yard run. That's impressive, but for Mahomes, it looked much slower than his usual self. His 100% self would have made that touchdown just then.

We're now at the 2-minute warning and Mahomes has brought the Chiefs into the red zone on that run. He's nursing the ankle but if he can just hold out until the end, the Chiefs may come away champions.

Jennifer Bubel

Pacheco gets 2 yards on the first down run and that will take us to the Two Minute Warning.

2nd and 8 from the PHI 15 coming up after the break!

as.com

Mahomes, who has been nursing that sore ankle for the last three weeks, takes off and picks up 26 yards on a scramble up the middle! Biggest play of the game so far!!

1st and 10 form the PHI 17!

3rd and 1 coming up from the KC 47.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

Pacheco got the 1st down carry and he just got crushed by Gardner-Johnson after a 2 yard pick up. He is slow to get up and we will take a break here from Arizona.

2nd and 7 from the KC 40 with 4:32 to go.

as.com

Mahomes finds SMith-Schuster on a comeback route to poick up 10 yards on the catch and run.

as.com

Pacheco gets the first down run and picks up 2 yards up the middle.

2nd and 7 from the KC 28.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

Hurts breaks Super Bowl record with three rushing TDs

The Eagles went for 2 after the touchdown, which of course was the right call. If two ties it up, you go for two. It paid off. It was Hurts with the TD and it was Hurts with the 2-point conversion.

Hurts has now set the record for most rushing touchdowns in the Super Bowl with his three tonight, surpassing Jim McMahon.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

So the MVP of the NFL Patrick Mahomes will take over from the 25 yard line with 5:15 left in the game and a chance to take the lead.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

Chiefs D force 3 and out

The Chiefs defense are stepping up now too. On 3rd and 3, Dunlap put the pressure on and Hurts had to throw it away. That's the first time that the Chiefs D has forced a 3 and out.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

The Eagles go three and out after KC brought the pressure and flushed Hurts out of the pocket. He threw the ball out of bounds and the Chiefs will get the ball back.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

Hurts finds Pascal for two yards on the left side and the Eagles are looking at 3rd down.

3rd and 3 from the PHI 32.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

TOUCHDOWN KANSAS CITY!!!

KC are up 28-27 with 12:04 to go in the 4th quarter!

as.com

Chiefs take the lead for first time

Toney made that walk-in touchdown look so easy as he was wide open and just waltzed right into the end zone. The Chiefs have taken the lead for the first time all night on a nine-play, 75-yard drive in 4 minutes, 41 seconds.

Jennifer Bubel

McKinnon gets the pitch to the left side and he gets 4 yards before getting stuck on the sideline.

2nd and 7 from the KC 28.

Nick Bolton having a game

Bolton is having himself a great game today. If that touchdown hadn't been called back, these stats would be looking even better. Bolton just stopped Gainwell at a critical 3rd down to force a field goal instead of a TD and give the Chiefs the ball back again with just under 2 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.

N.Bolton
  • 36Fumble return yards
  • 7Tackle solo
  • 1Fumble recovered
  • 1Fumble return touchdown

That was a 17 play, 7:45 drive. This has been a lecture on how to dominate possession, but KC only trail by 6.

4th and 6 coming up and the Eagles will kick the field goal.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

Philly took a timeout before the clock expoired and that's their first of the second half with 2:32 to go in the third quarter.

as.com

PHI tried the screen pass to Goedert but the pass came in low and fell incomplete.

3rd and 11 from the KC 20.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

When is a catch complete?

In case you were wondering why Goedert's catch was complete but Sanders' wasn't, here is what the NFL rulebook says about complete or not complete passes... (it's still unclear why Sanders' was incomplete to me though)

A pass is complete when:

a. secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and

b. touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and

c. after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, performs any act common to the game (e.g., tuck the ball away, extend it forward, take an additional step, turn upfield, or avoid or ward off an opponent), or he maintains control of the ball long enough to do so.

Jennifer Bubel

ON first down, Hurts rolls left and runs out of bounds but loses a yard.

Hurts off the play action and he took a shot to Watkins who had it in his hands but the WR couldn't make the catch.

3rd and 9 from the KC 42.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

Bolton almost got two fumble TD recoveries

Sneed knocked the ball out of Sanders hands, and Bolton ran it back into the end zone, but the refs reversed the call saying that the receiver didn't have control of the ball.

From where I'm sitting, I saw him catch the ball, run with the ball, and then drop the ball. But alas, the Eagles get their second chance.

Jennifer Bubel

Hurts felt the pressure and tucked it, but only picked up a couple yards on first down.

The Chiefs aren't loving this stat

Hurts has been the best player on the feild, with 183 yards and a TD on 17/22 passing. He also has two rushing TDs and 63 yards.

Brown has 74 yards receivng and Smith has six catches for 55 yards.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

The big question going into the second half is the status of Patrick Mahomes' ankle. He was tackled late in the seocnd quarter and limped off the field. We didn't see him or the Chiefs offense on the field after that, but walking back to the locker room he looked ok . There was a slight limp but we should see him back in the second half. How effective he will be is anoter story.

Jennifer BubelDane Arlauckas

This game got off to a feverish pace. Both teams scored on their opening drives.

Harrison Butker missed a field goal to swing the momentum to the Eagles. Hurts would hit Brown on a 45 yard TD five plays later.

KC bounced back after a rare Hurts mistake, when he coughed up a fumble and Boton ran it back a TD on a scoop and score.

PHI would get a couple late first half scores, first on a Hurts 4 yard TD and then on a Elliott FG to end the half.

First Half Summary

The Eagles have dominated the first half, especially in the second quarter. The score may not reflect that, but the time on the field will. Patrick Mahomes was only on the field a total of eight minutes.

Mahomes re-aggravates ankle

Late in the second quarter, Mahomes was tackled by the ankle and went hobbling off the field. He's got some time now at the half to work on it, but it's not a good sign for the Chiefs heading into halftime.

This is the first time all game it's looked like Mahomes was affected at all by the ankle sprain, but after being tugged and brought down by the ankle, he went limping off the field. The medical team will have a look and work on him a bit, but that's not good news for the Chiefs.

It's likely Mahomes will play through the pain as long as he's cleared to do so, but that 100% just got further away.

Hurts may have had a fumble, but I'd say he's otherwise having a pretty good game. The Eagles went for it on 4th and 5 and of course, it was Hurts who rushed it for the first down.

He's got 57 yards rushing and a touchdown so far in this game.

Mahomes ankle sprain

Patrick Mahomes injured his ankle in the Divisional Round just three weeks ago. It was a high ankle sprain, which isn't just a minimal injury. Mahomes is a tough player. He sat out for a little bit in that game after the sprain, but played through it for the second half, bringing the Chiefs to victory. He then led them to victory a week later in the AFC Championship game.

How is Mahomes' ankle holding up now?

Now that he's been able to rest for two weeks and focus on rehabbing it, Mahomes said ahead of the game that he was in great shape and didn't expect the sprain to be an issue during the Super Bowl at all. However, he also said that he wouldn't know for certain what shape he's in until gameday.

It's gameday now and Mahomes seems to be doing just fine. He's already rushed for eight yards and doesn't look to be struggling at all. Good news for the Chiefs.

At the end of the 1st quarter, we have so far seen an aggressive offensive game with both teams scoring touchdowns on their opening drives and doing so rather quickly and rather easily.

The rules in the NFL are so nit-picky. Just the elbow being down before the ball meant that what looked like a touchdown wasn't actually a touchdown. Of course, a team like Philly has no problem getting the TD on the second chance, but you really have to be precise in this league.

Philly's dominant D

Which is better? The Philly offense or the Philly defense? They are such a balanced team, it’s a tough question to answer, but when you look at the kind of season the defense had it’s hard to go against them. They are just eight sacks away from breaking the 1985 Chicago Bears record for sacks in a season.

Kansas City’s Super Bowl legacy goes all the way back to the first ever Super Bowl in 1967. They met the Green Bay Packers and saw Bart Star and the Pack lift the first ever Lombardi Trophy. Tonight marks the fifth time ever the Chiefs are playing on Super Bowl Sunday, and they have a record of 2-2. Three years after their loss to the Packers, KC returned to the big stage and defeated the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 for their first ever Lombardi Trophy. They would take a long hiatus from playing in the NFL title game, but Patrick Mahomes returned them to glory in Super Bowl LIV with a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers. The made the Super Bowl two years ago, but fell to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-9.

Eagles looking for second Lombardi Trophy

This will be the Eagles fourth Super Bowl in Franchise history. They are 1-2 in their previous three trips to the Super Bowl, with their only Lombardi Trophy coming back in Super Bowl LII when they beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 41-33. Before their win five years ago, they had a sad history of Super Bowl Sundays, losing to the Oakland Raiders 27-10 in Super XV, and then in Super Bowl XXXIX when the Tom Brady and the Patriots beat the Eagles 24-21.

KC back at the Super Bowl

The Chiefs have been in the spotlight ever since Patrick Mahomes took over as the starter in Kansas City. They won four of their first five, but there were still a lot of questions surrounding KC. They lost regular season games to the Bengals and the Bills who were considered their biggest competition coming into the year. After clinching the top seed in the AFC, they got their revenge on the Bengals following a Divisional Round win over the Jaguars to set up a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship. It was tight throughout the entirety of the conference title game, but Mahomes, and the revamped KC defense did just enough to set up a third trip to the Super Bowl in the Patrick Mahomes era.

Philly's path to the Super Bowl

The Eagles came into this season under the radar. No one outside of Philly expected this team to be where they are, but after winning their first eight games they jumped into the Super Bowl conversation. Their first loss came against their division rival, the Washington Commanders, but Jalen Hurts and the Eagles rattled off another five straight before the Eagles gunslinger injured his shoulder and they lost the two games they were without their QB1 under center. Hurts returned for the final regular season game and defeated the Giants to lock up the top seed in the NFC. After a first round bye they squared up with New York for the third time this season and blew the Giants out in a 38-7 thumping in the Divisional Round. Their conference championship game against the Niners was easier than expected after seeing Brock Purdy get knocked out of the game in the opening San Fran drive and they cruised into the Super Bowl in a 31-7 drubbing of the Niners to get to their second Super Bowl in the last five years.

Tonight's odds

According to Bet365.com, Super Bowl LVII couldn’t be any tighter. The Eagles come in as one point favorites with the Over/Under set at 51.

This one is almost too close to call, but with how good the Eagles have looked all season I have to take Philly. They can beat you in so many ways. They are the most complete team in football, and if they can figure out a way to contain, not stop ,but contain Patrick Mahomes I think they take this game.

How the NFC and AFC were won

The Eagles has the top record in the NFL from wire-to-wire. They started the season with 8 straight wins, and if Jalen Hurts didn’t injure his shoulder in the finals weeks of the season they very well could have been a one loss team going into the playoffs. They finished the season as 14-3 and won the NFC East and got the top seed in the conference. The Chiefs were the pace setters in the AFC all season, fighting off the Bills and the Bengals to get the top seed in the conference after finishing the season 14-3 and winning what would turn out as an underwhelming AFC West.

The MVP looking for SB #2

Patrick Mahomes was born for big moments. Since he was drafted by the Chiefs, he has been in the spotlight and it didn’t take long after having his name called by commisioner Goddell on Draft Day to propel himself into the “best QB in the NFL” conversation. With Tom Brady retiring, there is an open vacancy for that title. A win tonight, would lock him in as the best QB in the league after winning a second MVP in a season in which he lits his second Lomabrdi Trophy, not to mention his fantastic cameos in the State Farm commercials.

Hurts is in the building

It wasn’t long ago where there was a lot of doubt surrounding the future of Jalen Hurts in Philly. He didn’t convince everyone in the City of Brotherly Love in his first two seasons, but in his second season as the orchestrator of Nick Siriani’s he convinced everyone in Eagles nation that he is the QB of today and of the future. He was in the conversation for the MVP and tonight he has a chance to return the Eagles to glory tonight in Arizona.

Chief's last game

All eyes were on the injured ankle of Patrick Mahomes heading into the AFC Championship game. He was almost knocked out of the Divisional Round game against the Jags, but came back with a high ankle sprain and led the Chiefs past Jacksonville. The league MVP was hobbled, but under center in the AFC Championship against the Cincinnati Bengals. It was expected to be a shootout between Mahomes and Joe Burrow, but the offenses got off to a slow start.

KC kicked a field goal for the first and only points of the first quarter, and in the second quarter Mahomes hit his favorite target Travis Kelce on a 14 yard TD pass to go into the halftime break up 13-6. The Bengals started the second half by scoring a TD on their opening possession of the third quarter, but the Chiefs answered the Tee Higgins touchdown catch, with a Marquez Valdes-Scantling TD catch to take 20-13.

The boat started to rock a bit at the end of the third quarter, when Mahomes was strip sacked and six played later Samaje Perine tied the game up with a 2 yard TD run. The defense stepped up for KC and allowed Mahomes to work his magic with 30 seconds to go in the game. A 5 yard scramble by Mahomes turned into a 20 yard gain after a late hit by Joseph Ossai moved the Chiefs into FG range and Harrison Butker drilled the 45 yard game winning field goal with 3 seconds on the clock.

Philly's last game

It was quite literally a blood bath in the NFC Championship as the Eagles crushed the San Francisco 49ers who saw their third string quarterback go down in the first drive of the game. So there the Niners were in the conference title game, with their 4th string QB, Josh Jacobs, under center. Jacobs would go on to take a shot that put him in concussion protocol so he was sidelined as well. San Fran kept it close for about 25 minutes, but Philly pulled away at the end of the second quarter. With the score tied at 7-7,  Miles Sanders ran a 13 yard TD in with under two minutes to go in the half, and then a muffed snap led to a Philly fumble recovery and less than a minutes later Boston Scott stretched the first half lead to 21-7 with a 10 yard TD run.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' contract breakdown

Just to go back to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his salary for a moment. I hope you have your tissues at the ready as your eyes are going to be watering when you see some of these numbers.

Here's a more detailed breakdown of how much Mahomes earns, which is the biggest amount for a single contract ever signed in the NFL. Must be big then.

How does that compare to some of the world's other best-paid sports stars? Gidget is here with the answer.

How much do Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts make? Net worth and salary

It's impossible to get away from the Patrick Mahomes vs Jalen Hurts match-up, for a number of reasons. As we said earlier, it's the first time in the history of the Super Bowl that two black quarterbacks will start on opposing sides.

“To be on the world stage and have two Black quarterbacks start in the Super Bowl, I think it’s special, and I’ve learned more and more about the history of the Black quarterback since I’ve been in this league," Mahomes said in the run-up to the game.

There's no doubting the impact that Mahomes has had in NFL over the course of the last few years. Hurts is slightly newer to the scene but has also wowed us all with some of his performances. The two are equally as important to their respective teams but how much do they make in Kansas and Philadelphia respectively? Let's just say Hurts is due a pay raise...

Meet the coaches: the Kansas City Chiefs' Andy Reid

Meet the coaches: the Kansas City Chiefs' Andy Reid

You see everything I said about Nick Sirianni below? Well, pretty much the opposite is true for Andy Reid.

Of course, one of the most interesting sub-plots in this Super Bowl is that Reid is going up against the team he coached for 13 years between 1999 and 2012. In his time with the Eagles, despite receiving various coach of the year awards, he only once reached the season's showpiece, however, losing to New England Patriots at Super Bowl XXXIX.

Reid moved to the Chiefs in 2013 and finally got his hands on the Lombardi Trophy in 2020 at Super Bowl LIV, as the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, with Patrick Mahomes named MVP. Both Reid and Mahomes would settle for a repeat performance today.

Here's more on Reid's long and distinguished career from William.

41-year-old Nick Sirianni is the relative rookie on the touchline compared to his opposite number. The New York-state native is in his first job as head coach in the NFL and as a result is going to his first Super Bowl. Sirianni is 14-3 with the Eagles, with a 31-7 thrashing of the San Francisco 49ers the most impressive achievement of his time in charge so far.

Super Bowl LVII: the Kelce family final

Given just how many youngsters aspire to be professional sportsmen and women, it's quite incredible to think that this kind of thing happens. It's obviously in the genes.

As I'm sure you'll know, Jason and Travis Kelce are about to make history as the first brothers ever to play against each other in the Super Bowl.

Center Jason, the elder of the two, has been on the Philadelphia Eagles' roster since 2011, has been selected as a First-team All-Pro five times and elected to the Pro Bowl on six occasions. And, of course, he won Super Bowl LII in February 2018.

Travis, a tight end, has played for the Chiefs since 2013 and made the All-Pro first time four times, been elected to the Pro Bowl on eight occasions and won Super Bowl LIV in February 2020.

Similar achievements throughout their career but something's got to give in Glendale. The next family dinner could be awkward

Why do the Kansas City Chiefs wear the color red? What is the origin of their logo?

Now, I don't what you to accuse me of being biased, so in the interest of impartiality....

There's a little less to tell you in terms of the Kansas City Chiefs' colours but what if I told you that the Kansas City Chiefs weren't originally from Kansas City? That makes no sense. Why would they be called that, then? Well, they weren't.

Logos have changed along with the name, although the Chiefs' red has very much remained. Here's more from Paul.

Why do the Philadelphia Eagles wear the color green? What is the origin of their logo?

As hinted at below, Eagles mascot Swoop didn't actually used to be green, which would've made him an entirely inappropriate choice for the team back in the day. Although saying that...have the Eagles always played in green? What's that, they haven't? Well, I never.

As seems to have been the case in the history of a whole host of sports teams, the Eagles started off playing in a different colour to the one that we now associate with them. You might need to ask your grandparents (or maybe great-grandparents) about it though.

Here's a little bit of a history lesson on the Eagles' background from Paul.

Meet the mascots: the controversial KC Wolf

Unbelievably, we've got this far and not had any mascot chat. Time for that to change.

First up, the Chiefs' KC Wolf, who you might remember from tackling a drunk fan at the 2001 Pro Bowl and generally being a pretty upbeat kind of soul. Unfortunately, however, he also has a rather disturbing dark side to him (as well as a not-very-up-to-date Twitter account).

Distractify reported that “native American groups across the nation have asked various sports teams, such as the Washington Commanders (formerly the Washington Redskins) and baseball team the Cleveland Guardians (formerly the Cleveland Indians), to change their team names and mascots to reduce harm and cultural appropriation.”

What does that have to do with KC Wolf? Here's Joe to tell you more.

History being made at the Super Bowl

It's obviously been widely reported that this is the first time in history that two black quarterbacks will start in the Super Bowl.

Doug Williams, now a senior advisor at the Washington Redskins, became the first black QB to ever win the event back at Super Bowl XXII in 1987 and was named MVP for good measure. On that occasion, the Redskins thrashed the Denver Brancos by 42-10.

The Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes is, of course, no stranger to the Super Bowl having been named MVP in his team's victory over the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LIV in February 2020.

This, however, will be the Jalen Hurts' first taste of the Super Bowl. The 24-year-old Eagles QB was named to the Pro Bowl for the 2022season... the Super Bowl is the next logical step, right?

Why does the Super Bowl use Roman numerals?

Just as I was typing that last post, I got thinking about how intriguing it is that the Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to number their events. Why on earth do they do that? So, why the change? Here's Jeffrey and Calum to explain.

Which of the Eagles or Chiefs will get a Super Bowl championship ring?

You've all seen the weird and wonderful Super Bowl rings that have been made over the years I'm sure. But who gets one

The short answer is that "it depends". Each Super Bowl winner is able to order 150 rings and basically dish them out as they see fit. As you'd expect, there are some obvious candidates who probably get them before everybody else does, including the playing and coaching staff. What about practice squad members, surely they deserve a bit of love? And those unlucky souls who get injured right before Super Bowl (you all remember Carson Wentz)?

Four men from Barbados have played NFL before:

- Cornerback Sam Seale was the first Barbadian to play in the NFL mainly for the Los Angeles Raiders in the 1980s and 1990s. He now works as a scout for the Green Bay Packers.

- Cornerback Robert Baileywon the Super Bowl twice, once with the Dallas Cowboys in 1995 and then with Baltimore Ravens in 2000.

- Offensive tackle Ramon Harewood played for the Ravers and then the Denver Broncos between 2010 and 2014, winning Super Bowl XLVII with the former.

- Running back Elvis Joseph became the first Bajan to play in the NFL when he turned out for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2001 to 2003.

Aussie Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles will likely be fielding Australian Jordan Mailata at left tackle. He's not a small lad, listed at 6'8" and weighing in at 365 pounds. He was spotted after NFL execs saw footage of him plowing through opponents playing Rugby League - he played for Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs before joining the NFL through the International Player Pathway Program. He's originally from Bankstown, New South Wales.

He might well be joined by fellow Aussie Arryn Siposs, from Melbourne, Victory, with the punter being activated from injured reserve and likely to start ahead of Brett Kern, who has been on duty since Siposs injured his ankle against the New York Giants back in Week 14.

Super Bowl... or Merger Bowl

Back when the NFL and the AFL were discussing bringing the leagues together and having their best teams compete for a championship there were discussions about what to call the game. ('The Game' was in fact one option, which is neat, if rather stark).

It ended up being called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game for the first two games, yep, really trips off the tongue doesn't it, before Super Bowl became the official name for the third game in 1969 after basically everyone had started calling it that unofficially. (Credit for the name goes to Lamar Hunt of none other than the Kansas City Chiefs who was quoted in the Kansas City Star in 66 saying that was his term for the championship game)

However one name that had been bandied around during the set-up talks was Merger Bowl. Thank goodness we didn't end up with that...

Talking of Owls, there was once an American football team called the Owls. The Chicago Owls no less, who played in the Professional Football League of America in 1967, and then in the Continental Football League in 1968 and 1969. Sadly they folded before the start of the 1970 season. Sad twit-twoo.

Chiefs vs Eagles - Mahomes vs Hurts

One of the focuses, if not THE MAIN FOCUS of tonight's game is on the two quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. The two have been the best QBs and most valuable players this season by a long chalk, with Mahomes sweeping the 2022 NFL MVP on Thursday night at the NFL Honors, he claimed 48 of 50 first-placed votes and stacked up 490 points, Hurts got one of the other first-place votes and came in second with 193 points, meaning he was a lot of people's second choice.

Mahomes is going for his second Super Bowl - he led the Chiefs to victory at Super Bowl LIV - while Hurts is in his first season showdown. Notably this is the first time we've ever had two black quarterbacks in the Super Bowl.
