Jets coach Aaron Glenn denies he’s made decision on Week 8 starter

The New York Jets are 0-7, and owner Woody Johnson was critical of QB Justin Fields, but head coach Aaron Glenn has jumped to his players defense.

Update:

The New York Jets are 0-7 and when you are the coach of a winless team through seven weeks you have to deal with some uncomfortable questions. Aaron Glenn has found himself in this position quite a bit lately, and his latest press conference revolved around Jets’ owner Woody Johnson’s comments about Justin Fields.

Glenn defends Fields

The Jets brought in the former Chicago Bear and Pittsburgh Steeles on a two-year, $40 million deal but things haven’t exactly gone the way that Fields, Johnson or Glenn have wanted so far. New York have lost their first seven games of the season, and the offensive struggles have only amplified as the season has progressed.

While coach Glenn wants to see a change in results he has declined to throw Fields under the bus and instead jumped to his defense. He was asked about the bosses quotes concerning the QB1 and retorted, “That comment was actually said by a number of guys, including our quarterback, as far as the efficiency that we play. I don’t think there’s anywhere in that comment where he said he doesn’t like Justin...overall, we’re on the same page when it comes to that.”

Fields was pulled in the second half of the Jets loss to the Carolina Panthers, and speculation started to grow that Tyrod Taylor would be the starter from here on out. Glenn didn’t confirm or deny that Fields will be on the sidelines saying, “I wouldn’t want to give them a competitive advantage when I have that opportunity but we will have a quarterback.”

Trouble brewing in the Big Apple?

The Jets took the Pittsburgh Steelers to the finish line in a Week 1 shootout to start the season, and while the loss was disappointing, Jets fans had hope that maybe just maybe Fields was the answer under center. That hasn’t been the resounding feeling lately. The Jets have scored 11 points and 6 points in the last two games and Fields didn’t pass for more than 46 yards in either of those games against the Broncos and the Panthers.

Woody Johnson gave his opinion on the matter, claiming that the starting QB on a week to week basis is “completely up two the coach.” A clearly frustrated Johnson carried on saying, “the offense is not clicking. You can’t run the ball if you can’t pass the ball.”

The Jets are in the bottom six in the league in points per game and yards per game, and the only remaining team without a win. Johnson had one final word directed at Fields, saying “It’s hard when you’ve got a quarterback with a rating that you’ve got. He has ability, but something is not jiving.”
