Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Colin Kaepernick will not be joining the franchise as part of its coaching staff, at least for this season.

“I love Colin very much, but he won’t be on the coaching staff, which is planned for this year. And he won’t play on the roster either,” Harbaugh said.

Colin Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since January 2017 and has sought his return to the league, but without much success; this possibility that had arisen to be part of the Los Angeles Chargers meant a reunion with Jim Harbaugh, who had been his coach in his best years with the San Francisco 49ers.

Harbaugh had said he had discussed the possibility of joining his coaching staff since he was in Michigan with Colin Kaepernick.

“I’ve thought about it for a long time. Just the respect I have for his mentality in the game and the football man that he is.... The late Raiders owner Al Davis saw something in me that made him think I would be a good coach, and I see those same qualities in Colin. If it’s something he chooses to do,” Harbaugh said.
