Joe Burrow became the highest-paid player in NFL history after signing a five-year, $275 million extension with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2023. For comparison, Justin Herbert had just signed a $262.5 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Burrow was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, selected by the Bengals. He originally signed a four-year rookie contract worth $36 million, followed by a two-year extension before the record-breaking deal.

That new extension took effect after the 2024 season and includes an average annual salary of $55 million. The contract is guaranteed for $219 million and runs through the 2029 season, cementing Burrow’s status as one of the league’s elite quarterbacks.

The 2025 NFL offseason has shaken up the quarterback salary rankings. While Joe Burrow held the top spot in 2023, Dak Prescott has now surpassed him, signing a four-year, $240 million extension that gives him an average annual salary of $60 million, the highest in NFL history.

Other quarterbacks like Josh Allen, Trevor Lawrence, and Jordan Love have also signed major extensions, further reshaping the financial landscape.
