Update:

Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney is reported to have been arrested after allegedly assaulting a woman by strangling her.

Citing police documents, TMZ says Toney was detained in Georgia over a January 14 altercation in which he is accused of placing his hand around a woman’s throat “with enough force to cause her to be unable to breath.”

TMZ reports that the 26-year-old was placed in jail on a $50,000 bond in early February, having been charged with aggravated assault. He is also said to have tried to stop the woman from calling the police during the alleged incident, leading to a second charge of obstructing a 911 call.

What punishment could Toney be facing?

According to information published by the criminal defense firm Grisham, Poole & Carlile, an aggravated assault charge in the state of Georgia carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.

Per the firm Lawson & Berry, meanwhile, a charge of obstructing a 911 call in Georgia can lead to a fine of up to $1,000 and/or a custodial sentence of up to a year.

According to TMZ’s report, the woman involved in the alleged assault was left with red marks on her neck and hemorrhaging in her eyes.

Super Bowl winner with the Chiefs

A former Florida Gators star in college football, Toney was selected by the New York Giants in the 2021 NFL Draft. The wide receiver then also played for the Chiefs and the Cleveland Browns, before being released by the Ohio franchise in December.

During his time with the Chiefs, he was part of the Kansas City roster for two Super Bowl victories - in the 2022 and 2023 seasons - albeit he only played in the first of those title game triumphs.
