Update:

Dallas Cowboys’ superstar edge rusher Micah Parsons showed up to the team’s mandatory minicamp, but he’s still waiting on the contract extension he’s due. And although he’s not holding out, he’s warned owner Jerry Jones that he’s making a big mistake by waiting.

The Cowboys’ costly mistake with Parsons

The Cowboys have given no indication that Parsons will be with anywhere but Dallas in the future, yet they still haven’t given him the contract. It’s not the first time Dallas has done something like this. Just last season, they waited until the last minute to give contracts to quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb - two players they knew they needed to keep.

In both cases, but especially Prescott’s, that delay ended up costing them. The longer a team waits to get a contract done, the more the market increases as other teams and players do get theirs done. Prescott ended up becoming the highest-paid player in NFL history on a four-year, $240 million deal after other quarterbacks set the market price much higher than it had been earlier in the offseason. In fact, Bleacher Report recently ranked Prescott’s contract as the second-worst in 2025.

And now the Cowboys look to be repeating history with Parsons. As they continue to drag their feet, Parsons let his frustrations be known. In a candid report, he pointed out that the delay could end up costing them more as new deals for stars like T.J. Watt are set to raise the market.

“According to Parsons, the deal that [Pittsburgh Steelers pass-rusher TJ] Watt is seeking is more than what he and Jones talked about,” wrote Cowboys reporter Clarence Hill Jr. “And he said he has seen the number. Therefore, his deal is going to go up, which means the Cowboys are going to be paying more.”

Other pass rushers like Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett have already reset the market. Now Watt is next, as he’s set to receive around $40 million a year.

While Parsons remains professional and loyal, he isn’t hiding the fact that Dallas is hurting itself by not locking him in sooner. The message is clear: if the Cowboys want to keep one of the league’s top pass-rushers, they’ll have to pay up, and the longer they wait, the more expensive he’ll be.
