Mike Vrabel’s situation takes another turn: What his latest decision means
After more photos of Mike Vrabel and NFL insider Dianna Russini surfaced on Thursday, the Patriots coach is stepping away for counseling.

The situation surrounding Mike Vrabel took another dramatic turn just hours before the first round of the NFL Draft, this time shifting from speculation to consequence.
With newly surfaced photos and a major personal decision, the focus is no longer just on what happened, but on what comes next.
New photos of Vrabel and Russini change the timeline
Just as the story appeared to be settling, new images emerged showing Vrabel and Dianna Russini together in a New York City bar in 2020, years before the now-infamous Arizona resort photos that initially sparked the controversy.

According to reports, the two appeared to be “kissing” and “all over each other”, with an eyewitness adding that Vrabel “had a ring on” at the time.
What was initially framed by both sides as a recent, isolated interaction now appears, at minimum, to have deeper historical context.
Vrabel steps away from the draft
Shortly before the latest images were published, Vrabel made a the announcement that he will miss Day 3 of the NFL Draft to begin counseling. The decision marks the most tangible step he has taken since the story broke.

Rather than directly addressing the new photos, Vrabel has emphasized personal accountability and growth. He is expected to remain in contact with the team remotely, but his absence from the final day of the draft is a clear departure from business as usual.
He has also indicated a desire to become a better “husband, father, and coach” through the process.
When the initial Arizona photos surfaced, he dismissed the situation as a “completely innocent interaction” and said any suggestion otherwise was “laughable”. But in subsequent comments, that tone softened.
“I’ve had some difficult conversations with people that I care about,” Vrabel acknowledged. He also emphasized accountability. “We never want our actions to negatively affect the team.”

Notably, in his most recent remarks and actions, Vrabel has not repeated his earlier denial, instead focusing on responsibility and the impact on those around him.
Patriots publicly back their head coach
Despite the growing attention, the New England Patriots have made their stance clear. In a statement, the organization said they “fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family first” and his commitment to personal well-being.
Statement from Patriots:

“The New England Patriots fully support Mike Vrabel’s decision to prioritize his family first, as well as his own well-being. Mike has been open with us about his commitment to being the best version of himself for his family, this team and our fans, and…
This suggests that, at least internally, the focus remains on moving forward rather than disciplinary action. The NFL, meanwhile, is not expected to pursue an investigation.
Where this goes next
By choosing to step away, however briefly, and seek counseling, Vrabel is signaling that the situation is serious on a personal level, even if he has stopped short of publicly addressing specific allegations.
At the same time, his decision to avoid directly revisiting his original denial leaves a layer of ambiguity that continues to fuel discussion. With the draft underway and Vrabel trending nationally, this story is unlikely to fade for a while.
What happens next will likely depend on whether Vrabel addresses the new photos more directly and how quickly the Patriots (and the news cycle) move forward.
