Must watch games of Week 3: division showdowns, playoff rematches and a Monday night
The third week of the NFL season starts with an AFC East rivalry on Thursday Night Football and ends with a banger in Baltimore on Monday Night Football.
So far the first two weeks of the NFL season have not disappointed. There have been high scoring shootouts, plenty of parity and late game drama that has kept us on the edge of our seats from Thursday evening until late Monday night. This week should be no different as we have a full slate of games that includes divisional match ups, another post season rematch for the Super Bowl champs and a Monday night showdown that promises points by the bucketload.
These are the must watch games of Week 3 in the NFL.
Miami Dolphins vs. Buffalo Bills, Thursday @ 8:15 p.m. ET
As always we start with the Thursday Night Football game. This one looks lopsided on paper. The Buffalo Bills have been one of the best teams in the league, if not the best team in the league through two weeks, while the Dolphins have been the exact opposite. Miami got waxed by the Indianapolis Colts in Week 1 and lost to the New England Patriots at home last week. Tyreek Hill is on the verge of a meltdown, coach Mike McDaniel is on the hot seat and Tua Tagovailoa is trying to figure out how to bring back the magic to a one time juggernaut of an offense. The Bills don’t have any of those problems at the moment, and now they return home for a second straight division game against a team that they have beaten six straight times in 13 of their last 14 games.
Denver Broncos vs. Los Angeles Chargers, Sunday @ 4:05 p.m. ET
It’s an AFC West showdown between two teams who came into the season expecting to compete with the Kansas City Chiefs for the division title. The Chargers showed KC they meant business in Week 1 with their win over the Chiefs from Sao Paulo. Immediately the Chargers were put in the contender conversation as Justin Herbert out dueled Patrick Mahomes and the defense locked down the Chiefs. They breezed past the Raiders on the road on Monday night and now set their sights on the Broncos this week. The Broncos struggled more than expected against the Tennessee Titans as Bo Nix threw two picks and relied on the defense to barley squeak by the Titans. Last week they went to Indy and played a Colts team that has been the surprise of the early season. Nix played much better but the special teams let the team down, first missing a field goal that could have helped clinch the game, and then a leverage flag on a missed game winning field goal for the Colts gave Indy another chance and Spencer Shrader.
Los Angeles Rams vs. Philadelphia Eagles, Sunday @ 1:00 p.m. ET
A week after the Eagles played the Chiefs in a Super Bowl rematch, they have another postseason foe awaiting them this weekend. The Los Angeles Rams were far from upsetting the Eagles in the Divisional Round game for Philly last season. It took a 200 yard rushing performance from Saquon Barkley to lift the Eagles over the Rams last January. Now they meet again with both teams at 2-0 after Philly beat the Cowboys and the Chiefs in back to back weeks to start the season. It hasn’t been easy for the defending champs who have the bullseye on their back. The offense has yet to take off under new play caller Kevin Patullo, but it’s still early in the season. The Rams meanwhile have used their fantastic defense stifle opponents over the first two weeks of the season. They kept the Texans out of the end zone in their opener and allowed just one TD to the Titans last week as Matthew Stafford led a LA in a huge second half from Nashville.
Dallas Cowboys vs. Chicago Bears, Sunday @ 4:25 p.m. ET
Two of the most disappointing teams so far this season square off in the Windy City where the Chicago Bears will look for their first win of the season. It was an offseason full of high expectations for Caleb Williams and the Bears after bringing in Ben Johnson to lead an offense that needed a lot of help after the former No. 1 overall picks rookie year. A fourth quarter collapse against the Vikings in Week 1 started the tremors in Chi Town and last week’s bludgeoning at the hands of the Detroit Lions has Bears fans up in arms already. The Cowboys played the Eagles close in the game that kicked off the NFL season, losing by just four points to the Super Bowl champs. That was a sign that maybe just maybe things were looking up in Big D. Then the New York Giants came into town after not scoring a TD in their season opener and the Dallas defense made Russell Wilson look like Drew Brees. They allowed 37 points to New York, at home and needed a 64 yard field goal just to force overtime. Jerry Jones and the rest of the Dallas fans celebrated like they just won a playoff game once Brandon Aubrey knocked home the game winning in OT. Having said that, no one has any idea what to expect between these two teams this weekend.
Detroit Lions vs. Baltimore Ravens, Monday @ 8:15 p.m. ET
This is the Big Kahuna this week. The NFL made sure to put the Game of the Week under the bright lights of Monday Night. Both the Lions and the Ravens are figured to be Super Bowl contenders this year after their Super Bowl runs got cut short in the Divisional Round in the playoffs. The Lions got outclassed by the Green Bay Packers from Lambeau in Week 1, and everyone started throwing shade at Detroit, and their new offensive and defensive coordinator. Faith was restored last week as the Lions rebounded with a blowout win over the Chicago Bears last week. Those doubts were silenced, but this week they will have one of their toughest tests of the season. The Baltimore Ravens took the Bills all the way to the final second of the Week 1 opener from Ochard Park. A rare Derrick Henry fumble led to victory slipping out of the hands the Ravens in the final few minutes. They would respond with a big win over the Cleveland Browns, but it took a while for Lamar Jackson and the offense a little longer than expected to catch fire. Both teams will have plenty of urgency on Monday night as each look to avoid a 1-2 start to the season.
