NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reveals there will be more games played in Spain
Goodell says the league’s debut in Madrid exceeded expectations and confirms the NFL plans to keep expanding its growing footprint in Spain.
Roger Goodell says more NFL games will be played in Spain, calling Sunday’s debut in Madrid the start of a long-term plan for the league.
Commissioner Goodell clear on Spain’s NFL future
AS asked the million dollar question, and Goodell did not hesitate. Will the NFL return to Madrid after this weekend’s game? “Absolutely. We will see more NFL games in Spain. We are very happy here,” the commissioner told this newspaper. He added that the league’s first experience in the Spanish capital has exceeded expectations. “It has been terrific. The hospitality, the community, the sense of togetherness we are seeing.”
Strong early reviews inside the league
Goodell’s comments set the direction for the NFL’s future in Spain. Teams and league officials have been vocal about how impressed they are with this first edition in Madrid. During a visit to AS last Tuesday, Rafa de los Santos, who oversees NFL operations in Spain, reinforced that positive outlook.
Where future NFL games could be played in Spain
But until Sunday, no league executive, let alone the commissioner, had delivered such a definitive statement on expanding the NFL’s presence in the country. What comes next will depend on whether the league continues its partnership with Real Madrid and the Bernabeu as the main venue, or whether it looks to broaden its alliances. Other stadiums have been discussed in the past, including Atletico Madrid’s Metropolitano and the renovated Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona.
