NFL MVP Race after Week 4: Allen the front runner, Lamar Jackson drops after injury,
The first month of the season has come to a close and there is one clear favorite in the MVP race after four games and he plays QB for the Buffalo Bills.
The first month of the NFL season is in the books, and we’ve got a couple undefeated teams, a few winless teams and a whole lot of teams in between looking to make their early season case as contenders in this league. While the playoff picture is far from taking shape, the MVP race is starting to look like a runaway.
These are the MVP odds after Week 4 according to our friends at MGM Grand
Josh Allen, QB Buffalo Bills (-105)
The Bills win over the Saints wasn’t the prettiest of victories, but luckily for Buffalo they have the reigning MVP and he played like it when they needed him most. Through two quarters the Saints kept it close but when it was time to pull away and avoid any sort of upset scares Allen stepped up and took the game over. His numbers have been modest since putting up nearly 400 yards in Week 1 against the Ravens, but his team is winning and he’s making all the plays he needs to when his team needs him to.
Pass Stats: CMP: 70.2%, YDS: 964, TDs: 7, INT: 1, RTG: 109.7
Rush Stats: CAR: 31, YDS: 159, TD: 3
Justin Herbert, QB LA Chargers (+600)
The Chargers might have lost their first game over the weekend, but their quarterback slipped into the second spot in the MVP race. Nothing really worked for Herbert and the Chargers in their game from the Meadowlands. Their offensive lined is banged up, and that kept him under constant pressure which lead to him throwing his first multi-interception game since 2023. Despite the two INTs and the 56% completion rating, and the loss, the Chargers are 3-1 and Herbert is 4th in passing yards in the league to close down September.
Pass Stats: CMP: 63.8%, YDS: 1,063, TDs: 7, INT: 3, RTG: 92.2
Rush Stats: CAR: 19, YDS: 93, TD: 0
Patrick Mahomes, QB KC Chiefs (+700)
The return of Xavier Worthy might mean the Chiefs offense is back. Which means we might have the Patrick Mahomes of a couple years ago back under center in KC. Worthy being back took a huge burden off the shoulders of Mahomes, and that allowed his to orchestrate the offense easily against the Ravens. Baltimore’s D was banged up, so don’t dismiss that, but if I’m a KC fan seeing Mahomes throw for 4 TDs is a sight for sore eyes. Just imagine what this offense will look like when Rashee Rice comes back from suspension.
Pass Stats: CMP: 61.3%, YDS: 939, TDs: 7, INT: 1, RTG: 94.2
Rush Stats: CAR: 22, YDS: 130, TD: 2
Jalen Hurts, QB Philadelphia Eagles (+1300)
The Eagles are undefeated and that have managed to do so with with their QB passing for over 200 yards just once though the first month of the season. He does have five TDs in the last two weeks, but those are his only passing TDs and even his WR AJ Brown is growing frustrated for the lack of a passing game. The Eagles are winning games even without he passing game clicking, and you have to think it’s only a matter of time until Hurts reminds us that he is capable of putting up jaw dropping numbers. He just hasn’t needed to yet.
Pass Stats: CMP: 68.8%, YDS: 434, TDs: 6, INT: 0, RTG:136.6
Rush Stats: CAR: 8, YDS: 83, TD: 1
Lamar Jackson, QB Baltimore Ravens (+2000)
It went from bad to worse for Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens in the marquee matchup in Kansas City Chiefs. The Ravens got man handled while seeing a handful of starter on the defensive end go down and then to top things off Lamar Jackson was sidelined in the second half with a hamstring injury. His numbers were good coming into the Week 4 game, but he’s taking a lot of hits, and his numbers on the ground aren’t what we are used to. Despite the injury and the loss, he’s got 10 TDs and just 1 INT but he’s not getting much love from his defense or Derrick Henry who has fumbled away two wins.
Pass Stats: CMP: 71.6%, YDS: 869, TDs: 10, INT: 1, RTG: 130.5
Rush Stats: CAR: 21, YDS: 166, TD: 1
