Update:

At 24 years old, David Bell should be at the peak of his powers in the NFL. Instead, the Cleveland Browns wide receiver announced his early retirement from football on October 14.

Bell penned an emotional post on Instagram explaining his decision, which he described as “the last thing” he wants to do.

Why is David Bell retiring from football?

“Several months ago, I was blindsided by an off-field injury that was beyond my control, which put my football future in jeopardy,” Bell wrote. “After consulting with medical experts and praying, I accept that continuing to play football would literally risk life and limb.”

The 2022 third-round draft pick has not specified the injury that led him to give up the game he loves.

Bell’s last game for Cleveland

Bell never played for the Browns again after suffering a hip injury in Week 2 of the 2024 season, which led to him being placed on season-ending injured reserve. However, his retirement announcement makes clear that injury was not the reason for his decision.

In total, the Indianapolis-born wide receiver made 32 regular-season appearances for Cleveland, recording 41 catches for 408 yards and three touchdowns.

Life lessons beyond the field

A career cut devastatingly short, but one which has changed Bell’s life nevertheless.

“Football gave me memories I’ll cherish forever and taught me how through focus, selflessness, and determination, the whole can be greater than the collection of individuals,” he wrote. ”Thanks to God for guiding me every step of the way and for the strength to chase this dream.”

Bell also stated that he will use his NFL experience and “football learnings” in his next chapter, aiming “to help make the world a better place.”
