What Cape Verde needs against Saudi Arabia to qualify for the World Cup round of 32: All possible outcomes
As Group H reaches its climax, Cape Verde head into matchday three with a good chance of reaching the knockout stages.

Cape Verde can today become the smallest nation ever to reach the knockout stages of a men’s World Cup, as the Blue Sharks take on Saudi Arabia bidding to prolong their headline-grabbing debut campaign.
After against-the-odds draws with Spain and Uruguay in Group H, the Cape Verdeans remain unbeaten at the 2026 finals - and are firmly in contention for an automatic ticket to the last 32. What’s more, the Africans are well placed to progress even if they miss out on a spot in the group’s top two.
Heading into their matchday-three clash in Houston, indeed, Cape Verde have a healthy 64.17% chance of advancing, according to the soccer stats provider Opta.
How things stand in World Cup Group H:
| Team | P | W | D | L | GF | GA | GD | Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spain | 2 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 4 | 0 | +4 | 4 |
| Uruguay | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 0 | 2 |
| Cape Verde | 2 | 0 | 2 | 0 | 2 | 2 | 0 | 2 |
| Saudi Arabia | 2 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 5 | -4 | 1 |
What do Cape Verde need to qualify for the round of 32?
Having picked up points against two big-name teams - Spain and Uruguay outrank the tiny island nation by 65 and 48 places, respectively - Cape Verde will definitely qualify from Group H if they beat Saudi Arabia this evening.
Bubista’s men could even finish first with a win, but only if Uruguay beat Spain and Cape Verde finish with a better goal difference than the South Americans (or, if required, outdo the Uruguayans on subsequent tiebreakers).
As things stand, Uruguay and Cape Verde cannot be separated either by their goal difference or by the primary tiebreaker, head-to-head record. Los Charrúas only sit above the Blue Sharks because they netted one more goal on Group H’s opening two matchdays.
If Cape Verde draw with Saudi Arabia, a team ranked only six places higher than them, they will be certain to finish second if Spain win. If Uruguay draw with La Roja, a point could also be enough for the Cape Verdeans to be group runners-up. However, they would, at the very least, need to match the Uruguayans on the goals-scored tiebreaker.
Should Cape Verde and Uruguay finish level on goal difference and goals for, the following tiebreaker is disciplinary points. On that score, the South Americans currently lead by one. After teams’ fair-play record, the final factor brought into the equation is certain to go Uruguay’s way: world ranking.
If Cape Verde have to settle for third, though, a draw will probably take them through anyway. A tally of three points and an even goal difference would, as things stand, make the Cape Verdeans the fifth-best third-placed team in the 2026 group stage. In all, eight third-placed sides will qualify, with three - Bosnia-Herzegovina, Ecuador and Sweden - already sure to be among them.
If Cape Verde lose to Saudi Arabia in Texas, they will definitely be eliminated.

Can Cape Verde make World Cup history?
With a population of around 500,000, Cape Verde is the third-smallest nation ever to appear at a men’s World Cup, behind only Curaçao (158,000) and Iceland (340,000). And if they qualify for the round of 32, Bubista’s team will establish themselves as the only member of that trio to have successfully negotiated the tournament’s group stage.
Speaking yesterday, Cape Verde’s coach said his team has refused to be intimidated by playing on international soccer’s biggest stage. They head into tonight’s crunch clash armed with firm belief in their approach, he added.
“Football belong to everyone,” Bubista told reporters, per Reuters. “It does not belong only to wealthier countries.“
He continued: ”Saudi Arabia are a very organised team. They have great transitions, it is a difficult opponent, but we will rely on our organisation. We have confidence in our plan.”
