One NFL team got a record 7 primetime games - and some got none

The 2026 NFL primetime schedule is out, and the gap between the most and least featured teams is massive.

Update:

The NFL schedule was released on Thursday, and besides telling us the matchups, it also gives us a reflection of which teams the league believes fans most want to watch. And in 2026, one team stands clearly above the rest.

The Los Angeles Rams will play seven primetime games, tying the NFL’s all-time record for most in a single season. It’s a clear signal of their national appeal and expectations heading into the year, placing them in the spotlight more than any other team in the league.

Why the Rams are everywhere this season

Primetime slots - Thursday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, and Monday Night Football - are reserved for the NFL’s biggest draws. Teams that land the most appearances are typically contenders, major-market franchises or squads with star power that translates to strong TV ratings. The Rams check all of those boxes.

Whether it’s their recent success, star-driven roster or the Los Angeles market, the league has made them a centerpiece of the 2026 viewing schedule. Seven standalone games means extended exposure, short weeks and increased pressure, but also an opportunity to define the season on a national stage.

The teams right behind them

While the Rams lead the way, several other contenders weren’t far behind. Teams with six primetime games include the Buffalo Bills, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks, a group that reflects a mix of recent success, star quarterbacks and large national fanbases.

Just below them, a cluster of high-profile franchises landed five primetime appearances, including the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. These are teams the league consistently leans on to deliver ratings, regardless of year-to-year fluctuations.

The middle tier - and what it says

A large portion of the league falls into the middle, with four or three primetime games. Teams like the Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions and Pittsburgh Steelers remain regular fixtures in national windows, while others such as the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Chargers continue to maintain relevance without dominating the spotlight.

This tier often represents teams on the edge - playoff hopefuls, emerging contenders or franchises with market appeal that hasn’t fully translated into consistent scheduling priority.

The teams the spotlight skipped

At the other end of the spectrum, a handful of teams were almost entirely left out of primetime consideration. The Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints were each given just one primetime appearance.

Even more striking, four teams received zero standalone games: the Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans.

While flex scheduling later in the season can change that, starting with no primetime games is often a reflection of low expectations, limited national draw or uncertainty around team performance.

How the NFL decides primetime games

The NFL’s scheduling process blends competitive balance with television strategy. Matchups are selected months in advance based on projected team quality, star players, rivalries and market size. Networks also play a role, as each primetime package is tied to broadcast partners looking to maximize viewership.

However, the league does leave room for adjustment. Late-season games can be “flexed” into primetime slots, allowing surprise teams to earn national exposure if they outperform expectations.
