The NFL Conference Championship games are here and there’s some mouth-watering games coming up on Sunday. The Washington Commanders travel to the Philadelphia Eagles and the Buffalo Bills are at the Kansas City Chiefs.

But there’s another match-up that is really animating fans ahead of the games, another postseason meeting between Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. In recent years the Bills have often got the better of the Chiefs in the regular season but Mahomes and his team always manage to find a way in the playoffs.

Mahomes has won all three previous postseason games against Allen, notably winning the AFC Championship game against the Bills back in 2020. There’s a huge price tag on tickets for this year’s meeting as Buffalo looks for revenge.

Stephen A. Smith makes his pick for Mahomes vs Allen

Patrick Mahomes' Chiefs may have cruised to a 15-2 regular season record but it’s Josh Allen who finds himself on the shortlist for 2024 MVP award after a stellar year. This is the fourth time that Allen has been an MVP finalist and it may be his most convincing case.

The 28-year-old finished the regular season with 3,731 passing yards and 28 touchdowns, throwing just six interceptions across 16 appearances. ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith was previewing the game earlier this week and revealed that, in terms of form, he’s taking Josh Allen over three-time Super Bowl MVP Mahomes.

Smith explained: “Patrick Mahomes in terms of resume and accomplishments, better. But in this game, I don’t think you can say - based on the seasons they’ve had - that Patrick Mahomes is better.”

However, while the Bills have impressed this season there is an X-factor that often decides games of this stature.

Buffalo are hoping to get back to the Super Bowl for the first time in 31 years and are going for a first national championship in franchise history. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are currently on a run of three championships in five years and can complete a historic three-peat with another Super Bowl win this year.

The big-game experience possessed by the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Andy Reid has proved decisive in previous seasons and makes them near impossible to beat in the playoffs. As Smith said: “They can allow you to make them bend, bend, bend but not necessarily break. You get addicted to doing that and then when you’re called upon to do something else late, because Patrick Mahomes has come to save the day, you can’t do it.”

Sunday’s AFC Championship game is perfectly poised with the perennial champs taking on the up-and-comers. Both teams would be deserving of their place in Super Bowl LIX but it may take a moment of magic from either quarterback to get them there.
