As they now sit and sweat on their QB’s injury, the Patriots will be wondering whether they’ve now lost more than just a game on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins

Patriots’ Mac Jones suffers back injury

On Sunday evening, the New England Patriots lost to the rival Miami Dolphins in what has to be considered a less than ideal start to their 2022 NFL regular season. Indeed, it was not just that they lost, but it was the manner in which the fell to a 20-7 defeat that will likely be a cause for concern. Yet, the Patriots’ performance was quickly put on the back burner, when just an hour after the game, they announced that quarterback Mac Jones would be unable to field questions from the media, having suffered a back injury during the game.

Interestingly, Jones completed Sunday’s game, but was seen walking into the X-ray room at the stadium following the game. As things stand, it is understood that Jones’ initial X-rays came back negative, however, he is expected to undergo further evaluation upon return to New England. For the moment, there has been no official word on the severity of Jones’ injury or whether or not it will impact his availability for the Patriots’ Week 2 appointment with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

How did Mac Jones perform against the Dolphins?

‘Sloppy and careless’ would be two words that one could apply to the Patriots and their QB in the loss to the Dolphins. For his part the 24-year-old signal caller was sack twice and had two turnovers in his first game under senior assistant Matt Patricia who was serving as offensive play-caller on the night. In total, Jones threw 21 of 20 for 213 yards, one touchdown and one interception on Sunday. His fellow Alabama alumnus, Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa, was definitely more efficient on the day as he threw for 270 yards and like clockwork found new No. 1 receiver Tyreek Hill time and time again. With attention now turning to Pittsburgh, the Patriots can only wait to see if they will be able to count on their quarterback when next Sunday arrives.
