Patriots edge Buccaneers in thrilling road victory

The New England Patriots extended their unbeaten road record to 5-0 with a hard-fought 28-23 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Quarterback Drake Maye threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, efficiently managing the game with just one interception and one sack.

The Patriots’ ground game was equally impressive, led by rookie RB TreVeyon Henderson, who rushed for 147 yards and two scores, including a 69-yard touchdown burst. New England’s receiving corps saw Mack Hollins rack up 106 yards, while rookie Kyle Williams and Stefon Diggs added touchdowns in a balanced aerial attack.

Tampa Bay kept the game close behind Baker Mayfield’s 273 passing yards and three touchdowns, but the Buccaneers’ ground game produced only 113 yards, unable to match Henderson’s explosive performance. The Bucs’ defense registered just one interception, while the Patriots avoided turnovers entirely.

New England’s defense made key stops late, finishing with 74 total tackles, including two sacks and six tackles for loss. The Patriots’ special teams also contributed solid field position, helping secure a late fourth-quarter score to seal the victory.

With the win, the Patriots improve to 8-2 overall and 5-0 on the road, maintaining momentum as they look toward a deep playoff push.

In Week 11, the Patriots will host the New York Jets for Thursday Night Football while the Buccaneers take on the Buffalo Bills on the road on Sunday.

The Bucs had several big plays help them down the field, and on 3rd and goal, Mayfield made the pass to Tez Johnson in the end zone for the 10-yard touchdown. They went for two, but their trick-play pass to Egbuka was shut down right away by the Pats' defense. The Pats keep the lead, but the Bucs cut it to 5 points with 4:12 to play in the 3rd quarter.

Patriots Injury Report

The New England Patriots will be missing three key starters against the Buccaneers, all of whom were ruled out on Friday. RB Rhamondre Stevenson (toe) will miss his second straight game, WR Kayshon Boutte (hamstring) will sit for the first time this year, and LB Christian Elliss (hip) will also be sidelined.

Drake Maye for MVP?

Drake Maye and the Patriots enter Week 10 with a huge opportunity to solidify their Super Bowl credentials, and boost Maye’s NFL MVP campaign, as they face the Bucs on the road.

Maye has been the driving force behind New England’s surprising success in 2025, leading the league in completion percentage (74.1%), EPA (+73.3), and completion percentage over expected (+9.6). He’s also among the top five in passing yards (2,285) and touchdowns (17) while ranking second in passer rating (116.9). If he has a massive game against the Bucs today, he could emerge as the MVP front-runner with a win in Tampa.

The Patriots will still need to contain Mayfield and a Bucs offense missing key weapons. A victory would keep New England atop the AFC East and further establish Maye as one of the league’s brightest young stars.

The Week 10 showdown between the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers brings together two of the NFL’s hottest quarterbacks - Drake Maye and Baker Mayfield - in what’s being called a “passing of the torch” moment for two franchises still defined by Tom Brady’s legacy.
