Pittsburgh Steelers release Jonnu Smith
Jonnu Smith joins Cade Otton and Isaiah Likely as the most intriguing free agent tight ends for a potential team change this NFL offseason.
NFL roster shuffling continues as teams reshape their lineups ahead of the upcoming season. In Pittsburgh, the Steelers still haven’t settled their quarterback situation as they wait to see whether Aaron Rodgers will agree to return for one more year. But they have made a notable move at tight end.
Tight ends looking for a new destination
According to reports, the Steelers have released Jonnu Smith after just one season with the team—a decision that frees up $7 million in salary‑cap space. Smith now joins Cade Otton and Isaiah Likely as free‑agent tight ends on the market.
Smith’s production in Pittsburgh was limited: 38 catches for 222 yards and two touchdowns in his lone campaign. The Steelers still have Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington on the roster, giving them stability at the position despite Smith’s departure.
The veteran tight end arrived from the Miami Dolphins last offseason and had one year left on his contract. Remarkably, Smith has now played for four different teams in four seasons—the Patriots, Falcons, Dolphins, and Steelers.
