The biggest storyline during the Dallas Cowboys’ offseason has been contract talks. With quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb on the last year of their contracts, the Cowboys have been letting things play out rather than coming to an agreement on a new deal just yet. With training camp having started today, the pressure is on.

Edge rusher Micah Parsons, whose contract is up in 2025, is also looking to be the highest-paid non quarterback as he awaits an extension of his own. It’s Lamb who’s been holding out on practices to get a deal done though. And as for Prescott, he’s been waiting patiently, confident things will fall into place.

Will Dak Prescott play for the Cowboys next year?

During the Cowboys press conference from their training camp in Oxnard, California, owner Jerry Jones attempted to defend the team’s reasons for putting off such a big decision for so long. It came out as confused ramblings that were difficult to follow, but in the end, he told reporters he did expect Prescott to play for Dallas beyond this last year of his contract.

The reality is though, Prescott is in the last year of his contract without the possibility of a franchise tag and no deal has been signed. Prescott also made some comments that indicate he’s aware of that reality, and knows it very well could be his last year with the Cowboys.

“At the end of the day, it’s a business,” Prescott said before hesitating ahead of his next sentence.

“You know...I’m gonna say it. I want to be here, but, when you look up, all the great quarterbacks I watched played for other teams. My point in saying that is that’s not something to fear. That may be a reality for me one day. It may not be my decision. That’s the freedom that I have.”

Prescott went on to explain that he prefers to focus on football rather than the contract because he “loves being a Dallas Cowboy”. Indeed, Prescott seems to be the only person not concerned about what the future may hold, trusting that whatever happens will be what is meant to happen.
