Punch to the groin? Monday Night Football fight sparks league review
A scuffle between 49ers’ Jauan Jennings and Panthers’ Tre’von Moehrig started with a groin punch and ended with a slap. Will there be consequences?

Tempers were already high as the San Francisco 49ers closed out their 20–9 Monday Night Football win over the Carolina Panthers, and by the time the final whistle blew, the tension boiled over into one of the most talked-about postgame incidents of the NFL season. What started as a heated exchange between two physical players quickly escalated into a viral moment, sparking questions about fines, league discipline, and how teams handle retaliation when a dirty play goes unnoticed by officials.
What punishment will follow the Jauan Jennings–Tre’von Moehrig scuffle?
The tiff came late in the fourth quarter, when Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig appeared to swing a closed-fist punch directly into 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings’ groin, a moment captured clearly on ESPN’s broadcast but missed by referees in real time. Jennings crumpled to the turf and immediately pleaded for a penalty that never came.

That unseen “cheap shot,” as 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan later described it, set the stage for what unfolded moments after the game ended. As cameras followed players shaking hands, Jennings confronted Moehrig and slapped him across the face before taking additional swings as staff and teammates pulled him away.

“I was just responding to some childish behavior,” Jennings said afterward, visibly frustrated and still angry about the unflagged strike.
“That was just out of nowhere,” Jennings said. “I think it’s probably just like I was saying, just the history of me playing ball. I play hard. I’m physically stronger than a lot of [defensive backs] out there and a lot of things happen in between the whistles. With me at least.”
Moehrig acknowledged his role, telling reporters, “He was just doing some extra stuff after the play… I’ll take that one,” adding that he expected to be fined by the league.
Panthers head coach Dave Canales said the team will consider internal discipline “I’ll get to the bottom of that. I want to see exactly what happened. I haven’t had the chance to talk to Tre about that yet. That’ll be a conversation.”
The NFL has now said they will suspend Moehrig for one game for his punch to Jennings’ groin.

As for Jennings, he will not be suspended, but the NFL is reviewing the footage and may impose a fine.
