Rashan Gary trade explained: Why the Cowboys see him as a game-changer
The Dallas Cowboys have traded with the Green Bay Packers to acquire defensive end Rashan Gary.
The Dallas Cowboys have bolstered their defensive line with a high-impact addition. After missing out on Maxx Crosby, Dallas acquired Rashan Gary from the Green Bay Packers in a trade that sent a 2027 fourth-round pick back to Green Bay, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Gary, a versatile defensive lineman with a proven NFL track record, immediately becomes one of the most intriguing pieces of the Cowboys’ front seven. The move not only addresses depth concerns but also gives Dallas a dynamic player capable of pressuring quarterbacks and stopping the run.
Who is Rashan Gary? - From top draft pick to consistent impact player
Rashan Gary, 26, was drafted No. 12 overall by Green Bay in 2019 and has since established himself as a consistent pass-rushing threat. Over his NFL career, he has recorded 46.5 sacks, ranking sixth in Packers history since sacks became an official stat in 1982.
Despite not always being a high snap-count player (last season he appeared in only 58.3% of defensive snaps), Gary has made his presence felt. Early in the 2025 season, he tallied 7.5 sacks in the first seven games, demonstrating his ability to make big plays when given the opportunity.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur noted, “He’s never been a huge snap count guy, if you look at the course of his career,” highlighting that Gary’s value often comes in bursts of high-impact play rather than constant rotation.
What he brings to the Cowboys
The Cowboys are coming off a 2025 season that saw one of their worst defensive units in years. Gary’s addition provides Dallas with an immediate, reliable option to maintain pressure.
Gary is a versatile pass rusher. He can play both defensive end and interior line roles, giving coordinator Christian Parker flexibility in setting up defensive schemes. He has the size and athleticism to plug gaps and disrupt running lanes, a key need for Dallas’ front seven. He also brings experience and production. He’s played in every Packers game except one over the past three seasons and has consistently pressured quarterbacks, including recording 60+ pressures in 2025.
Financially, Gary is under contract through 2027 at $18 million in 2026, meaning Dallas can acquire a proven defender without major cap strain. The trade also frees nearly $11 million in Packers salary-cap space, demonstrating that both sides found a mutually beneficial deal.
Gary enters a Cowboys defense that has reshaped its front line following Micah Parsons’ departure. He pairs with other key pieces, including the recently acquired Kenny Clark, to provide a blend of interior disruption and edge pressure.
