The son of an NFL legend has tragically died at a young age, leaving nothing but questions, sorrow, and sad reflection on what could have been a life fulfilled.
As we say time and again, there is nothing quite like the sudden loss of life, and even more so when it’s that of a young person. Yet, unfortunately, that’s the situation facing former NFL legend Ray Lewis and his family as they come to terms with the death of his son.
Ray Lewis III passes away
According to reports, Ray Lewis III died on Thursday at age 28. The son of former Miami Hurricanes and Baltimore Ravens Pro Football Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis, he played for his father’s alma mater for two seasons and was regarded as a decent talent. Following reports of his passing, his younger brother, Rashan, posted a picture on his Instagram account with further confirmation of his older brother’s untimely death. Indeed, it wasn’t long before several others including Lewis’ former coach at Virginia Union acknowledged the tragic news.
“Really can’t believe I’m even typing this but RIP big brother. A true angel I pray your at peace now because [I know] how much you was [really] hurting I don’t and won’t ever have the words man cuz this pain right here,” Rashaan Lewis wrote. “... I love you I love you I love you your niece gone miss you but she will hear about u over and over just watch over us all big bruh be our guardian I promise I’ll make you smile and proud.”
Who was Ray Lewis III the football player?
As mentioned above, Lewis III actually played for the same college as his father. Indeed, it was with the Hurricanes that he started his college career. Eventually going on to spend two seasons in Miami as a cornerback, where he played largely on special teams across nine appearances for the team. He would later transfer to Coastal Carolina in his third year and there he recorded posted a total of 19 tackles and returned kicks for the team. 2017 was the final campaign in which Lewis took to the field and it was with Virginia Union. There recorded a total of 37 tackles for loss, something the former Virginia Union coach, Mark James, probably had in mind when lamenting the young man’s passing on his personal Facebook page.
“Young man it was a pleasure to bring you to Virginia Union. Ray Ray May God bless your family. Great young man,” James said in a post. There has been no official word on Ray Lewis III’s cause of death nor any statement from his father.
