Update:

Last night the ESPYS were held in Los Angeles and Shane Gillis hosted the show in front of a star studded audience from the Dolby Theatre. The guns were blazing as the comedian poked fun at some of the biggest, most famous athletes in the world.

Gillis takes aim at ESPY audience

It seems like Gills has been everywhere these days. His comedy shows are through the roof. You can’t open up Instagram without seeing one of his skits or him on a podcast, and last night ESPN jumped on board bringing him in to host the yearly award show put on by the network.

As always everyone is fair game during the opening monologue, including Deshaun Watson, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and of course Donald Trump. One of the most memorable moments of the night was when the comedian put Cleveland Browns recent fifth round draft pick Shedeur Sanders in the crosshairs just months after his jersey was retired at the University of Colorado.

Gillis joked, “People are saying it’s because of nepotism because of his father, it’s not. It is because he went 13-12 over his career and he almost won the Alamo Bowl. Definitely not nepotism?” Obviously this is a jab at the rookie QB, since jerseys are retired for legends of the program, and usually it doesn’t happen until years, if not decades after a player leaves their mark on the school’s history.

Shedeur’s time to shine in Cleveland

It took Sanders just a few months to get his No. 2 jersey honored at Folsom Field in Boulder. Deion’s son spent two seasons in Colorado after following his dad from Jackson State to the University of Colorado. While the Buffaloes struggled, especially in the Sanders’ boys first year, Shedeur put up some really good numbers.

Colorado went just 4-7 in 2023, but in that year Shedeur passed for 3,230 yards and threw 27 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Last year the Buffaloes were better and as a result Shedeur’s numbers skyrocketed with the help of Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter. He threw for 4,134 yards, 37 TDs and just 10 interceptions while completing a record 74% of his passes which led the FBS.

There was talk of him going to the Tennessee Titans with the first pick of the NFL Draft, but his stock seemed to plummet after the season and in the months leading up to the draft. He sank to the fifth round of the NFL Draft when the Cleveland Browns took him with the 144th pick. Now the 2024 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner won’t be worried about being the star in Cleveland for now. For now, he’s just got to make sure he makes the roster over the next couple of months.
