Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Champions 2023 live updates: Mahomes wins his 2nd championship
Super Bowl 2023: Kansas City Chiefs 38 - 35 Philadelphia Eagles final score
Chiefs defeat Eagles to win Super Bowl LVII
What a game! Both the Eagles and Chiefs played aggressive on both offense and defense. There were some questionable calls on both sides that impacted the game, but in the end, the Chiefs deserved the win.
Hurts has incredible, record-breaking first Super Bowl
Even though the Eagles didn't get the win, Jalen Hurts had an incredible first Super Bowl. In just his third year in the NFL, Hurts took his team to the final and nearly won it for them, all the while breaking records. He had one fumble, which was run back for a touchdown by Chiefs' Nick Bolton, but otherwise had a beautiful game with few errors,
Hurts broke two records, for most rushing yards and most rushing touchdowns by a QB in the Super Bowl. He finished with three rushing touchdowns, the most by any quarterback in a Super Bowl in NFL history. He broke Jim McMahon's record of two back in 1986. He finished the game with 70 rushing yards, breaking Steve McNair's previous record of 64 back in the year 2000.
Despite the loss, Hurts can expect a contract extension coming in 2024.
Mahomes wins Super Bowl MVP
Patrick Mahomes was playing with a high ankle sprain he suffered three weeks ago and though he was feeling better ahead of the game, he tweaked it again in the second quarter.
Of course, he insisted on playing through the pain and did so, coming back in the second half and leading the Chiefs on another scoring drive. He continued on and led them to victory with 21 of 27 yards, 182 yards, three touchdowns, plus six carries for 44 yards.
Mahomes won the Super Bowl MVP award, becoming the first Black quarterback to have won the Super Bowl and the first Black QB to have won the Super Bowl MVP more than once.
Butker the hero
The Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker had a doink early on in the game. If he hadn't missed that one, the Chiefs would have taken the lead over the Eagles, but instead, they didn't have the lead at all until quite late in the game.
He more than made up for that though as he kicked the game-winning field goal from 27 yards with 11 seconds left. That field goal was set up on a run by Chiefs RB Jerick McKinnon, who slid just short of the touchdown to assure that they could run the clock down just enough to not allow Philly a chance at scoring again. It was a strategic move that worked out in Kansas City's favor and ended up in their Super Bowl victory.
Rihanna announced she was pregnant, maybe?
There has been much speculation that during the halftime show, Rihanna alluded to the fact that she is pregnant. There has been no confirmation of this, but she did rub her belly in a way that pregnant women often do at a moment when she was singing the lyrics, "when you hold me, I'm alive".
Besides that possibility, it was just good to see her back on the stage again. Ri Ri was as radiant as ever and looked as comfortable on the stage as she ever has been.
Travis Kelce's words of consolation for brother Jason
For the Kelce family, there was only going to be one winner in Sunday's Super Bowl LVII. Brothers Travis and Jason Kelce were on opposing teams at State Farm Stadium and it was Travis's Kansas City Chiefs who prevailed, edging his brother Jason's Philadelphia Eagles 38-35.
Travis, who had 81 receiving yards and a touchdown, admitted afterwards that it was a strange feeling to beat his own brother's team. "There’s nothing you can really say to a loved one in a situation like that. You joke around all the time and say you want to beat your brother on the biggest stage, but it’s a weird feeling".
The two brothers gave each other a hug out on the field as the confetti flew for the Chiefs. "There’s nothing I can say to him other than I love him and he played a hell of a year, a hell of a season," Travis said in a consolation message to his brother.
Jason, who won a championship ring with the Eagles in 2018, tried to remain positive in defeat: "It's hard to get here. Obviously, we would have liked to win but I'm happy for Trav".
TV record for Super Bowl LVII
Given the match up of the two best teams and the two best QBs plus Rihanna at halftime, FOX were talking up the chances of tonight's show breaking the all time record.
What a week it has been for Patrick Mahomes, who now should be considered the best quarterback in the league.
Momma Donna got plenty of pub this week, and finished off Super Bowl Sunday with a Super hug for her son Travis.
There could only be one Kelce walking off the field a winner, but the two shared a post game hug after setting history by becoming the first brothers to compete in a Super Bowl.
Harrison Butker seals the Chiefs second Super Bowl in the last four seasons with this 33 yard field goal.
Mahomes had his already injured ankle shaken up in the first half, but this 24 yard run showed what a warrior he is. Less then three minutes later, the Chiefs were kicking the game winning field goal.
Jalen Hurts tied up the game with his third rushing TD of the night and punched in the two point conversion to tied the game.
Kadarious Toney came in to Kansas City in the middle of the season and ended up giving the CHiefs their first lead of the Super Bowl with this 5 yard catch.
KC looked like a different team coming out of the break and the drove right down the field to open the third quarter with a TD.
The Eagles looked like they were going to take control of the game at the end of the first half when Hurts ran his second TD in and a field goal to end the second quarter put Philly up 10.
Mahomes Stats
Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes' stats at the end of Super Bowl LVII, thanks to our friends over at SofaScore!
Nick Bolton was in the right place at the right time after watching Hurts' non contact fumble, he scooped it and scored the TD to tie the game up in the second quarter.
Jalen Hurts had a near perfect half in his Super Bowl debut and no pass was better than this 45 yard bomb to AJ brown.
Who else was Patrick Mahomes going to go to on the first TD of his night? Travis Kelce has been his favorite target and the wasted no time reminding everyone.
This game got off to a flying start as both teams came out and scored TDs to open the game. Hurts ran in the first of his three rushing TDs on the night.
That will go down as one of the best games in Super Bowl history. The finish left a bit to be desired. Take nothing away from the Chiefs, but the defensive holding flag to give the KC the first down took away from what could have been an incredible end. It could have been called, but to decide a Super Bowl on a 50/50 flag is a shame to see.
FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THE LAST FOUR YEARS THE KANSAS CITY CHIEFS WILL LIFT THE LOMBARDI TROPHY!!!
CHIEFS WIN SUPER BOWL LVII!!!
Hurts' Hail Mary comes up well short of the pile, and the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS WIN SUPER BOWL LVII!!!!

The great debate
Was it smart of McKinnon to stop short of getting the touchdown so that the Chiefs could run out the clock and stop the Eagles from getting a chance to score?
If they get a field goal, most will say yes. If he misses it, well...maybe another story.
McKinnon took it all the way down to the 1 yard line as the Eagles were inviting him to score.
PHI take a TO with 1:36 to go.
Mahomes was pressured and just lofted it up to Smith-Schuster and a defensive holding call will give the Chiefs a first down!!!

Mahomes looks for Smith-Schuster on a screen pass but he is stopped at the line of scrimmage. PHI take a TO with 1:54 to go in the game.
3rd and 8 coming up fro the PHI 15.
Mahomes in pain
You can definitely tell Patrick Mahomes' ankle is bothering him, and yet...he just went on a 26-yard run. That's impressive, but for Mahomes, it looked much slower than his usual self. His 100% self would have made that touchdown just then.
We're now at the 2-minute warning and Mahomes has brought the Chiefs into the red zone on that run. He's nursing the ankle but if he can just hold out until the end, the Chiefs may come away champions.
Pacheco gets 2 yards on the first down run and that will take us to the Two Minute Warning.

1st and 10 from the KC 38.
Pacheco gets the first down run and picks up 2 yards up the middle.
2nd and 7 from the KC 28.
Hurts breaks Super Bowl record with three rushing TDs
The Eagles went for 2 after the touchdown, which of course was the right call. If two ties it up, you go for two. It paid off. It was Hurts with the TD and it was Hurts with the 2-point conversion.
Hurts has now set the record for most rushing touchdowns in the Super Bowl with his three tonight, surpassing Jim McMahon.
So the MVP of the NFL Patrick Mahomes will take over from the 25 yard line with 5:15 left in the game and a chance to take the lead.
TOUCHDOWN EAGLES!!!

PHI start their drive from the 25 and Sanders fight for 5 yards on first down.
Hurts vs Mahomes
Here's how the two QBs compare so far in tonight's Super Bowl, but keep in mind, Mahomes has played way less minutes than Hurts.
TOUCHDOWN KANSAS CITY!!!
Mahomes finds Moore for a WIDE OPEN TD catch from 4 yards out!! That was the same play they ran to Toney just on the other side of the field
KC stretch their lead out 35-27 with 9:22 to go in Super Bowl LVII.

Chiefs D force 3 and out
The Chiefs defense are stepping up now too. On 3rd and 3, Dunlap put the pressure on and Hurts had to throw it away. That's the first time that the Chiefs D has forced a 3 and out.
The Eagles go three and out after KC brought the pressure and flushed Hurts out of the pocket. He threw the ball out of bounds and the Chiefs will get the ball back.
Hurts finds Pascal for two yards on the left side and the Eagles are looking at 3rd down.
3rd and 3 from the PHI 32.
Philadelphia gets the ball back, trailing for the first time tonight. They start their drie from the 25, and Goedert made an impossible catch as Hurts released it with a hand in his face.
After all that it's 2nd and 5 after the 5 yard pick up.

KC are up 28-27 with 12:04 to go in the 4th quarter!
Chiefs take the lead for first time
Toney made that walk-in touchdown look so easy as he was wide open and just waltzed right into the end zone. The Chiefs have taken the lead for the first time all night on a nine-play, 75-yard drive in 4 minutes, 41 seconds.
McKinnon gets the pitch to the left side and he gets 4 yards before getting stuck on the sideline.

1st and 10 form the KC 36.
KC get the ball from the 25 with a chance to take the lead. Mahomes starts the drive with a short pass to Kelce for 3 yards.
2nd and 7 from the KC 28.
Nick Bolton having a game
Bolton is having himself a great game today. If that touchdown hadn't been called back, these stats would be looking even better. Bolton just stopped Gainwell at a critical 3rd down to force a field goal instead of a TD and give the Chiefs the ball back again with just under 2 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter.
- 36Fumble return yards
- 7Tackle solo
- 1Fumble recovered
- 1Fumble return touchdown
That was a 17 play, 7:45 drive. This has been a lecture on how to dominate possession, but KC only trail by 6.
FIELD GOAL EAGLES!!!

PHI tried the screen pass to Goedert but the pass came in low and fell incomplete.
3rd and 11 from the KC 20.
When is a catch complete?
In case you were wondering why Goedert's catch was complete but Sanders' wasn't, here is what the NFL rulebook says about complete or not complete passes... (it's still unclear why Sanders' was incomplete to me though)
A pass is complete when:
a. secures control of the ball in his hands or arms prior to the ball touching the ground; and
b. touches the ground inbounds with both feet or with any part of his body other than his hands; and
c. after (a) and (b) have been fulfilled, performs any act common to the game (e.g., tuck the ball away, extend it forward, take an additional step, turn upfield, or avoid or ward off an opponent), or he maintains control of the ball long enough to do so.

Bolton almost got two fumble TD recoveries
Sneed knocked the ball out of Sanders hands, and Bolton ran it back into the end zone, but the refs reversed the call saying that the receiver didn't have control of the ball.
From where I'm sitting, I saw him catch the ball, run with the ball, and then drop the ball. But alas, the Eagles get their second chance.
Hurts felt the pressure and tucked it, but only picked up a couple yards on first down.
2nd and 8 from the KC 41.

TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS!!!
Pacheco bullies his way into the end zone on a 1 yard run and what a start to the second half that was for Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs! His ankle seemed just fine on that drive that included a 14 yard scramble.
KC still trail 24-21 five and a half minutes into the third quarter.
Such expensive, yet slippery grass!
The grass at the Super Bowl is hella expensive, and yet the players are slipping all over the place. Even Isiah Pacheco just slipped while doing a celebration TD dance, Wouldn't THAT be a shame if a player got injured in a slip celebration??
Mahomes to McKinnon for a 3 yard gain before getting cut down by Maddox.

2nd and 3 frmo the KC 32.
Mahomes on the field in second half
Patrick Mahomes still needs some work, but he's back on the field for now. If he does leave the game at some point, it'll be backup quarterback Chad Henne who comes in for him.
Henne played in place of Mahomes during the Divisional Round when he initially suffered the high ankle sprain. In that game, Henne led the Chiefs on a scoring drive to throw his first NFL post season touchdown to Travis Kelce.
Read more about who ChadHenne is as we head into the second half of Super Bowl LVII.
WE ARE BACK IN PLAY FROM ARIZONA!!!
KC get the ball first to start the second half, and they will begin their drive from the 25 yard line.
Rhi Rhi rocked it.. Now it's time to get back to the game. The Chiefs will get the ball back to start the second half. How will Mahomes' ankle be after a long halftime break?
Rihanna is on the stage!
Halftime show is on and Rihanna is opening with B*tch Better Have my Money decked out in red, check out the live coverage here!
Mahomes was barley on the field in the fist half. He was 8/13 for 89 yards and a TD, but never could get into a groove.
Kelce has 60 uards receiving, but no one else has really got involved in the passing game.
Hurts has been the best player on the feild, with 183 yards and a TD on 17/22 passing. He also has two rushing TDs and 63 yards.
Brown has 74 yards receivng and Smith has six catches for 55 yards.
The big question going into the second half is the status of Patrick Mahomes' ankle. He was tackled late in the seocnd quarter and limped off the field. We didn't see him or the Chiefs offense on the field after that, but walking back to the locker room he looked ok . There was a slight limp but we should see him back in the second half. How effective he will be is anoter story.
This game got off to a feverish pace. Both teams scored on their opening drives.
Harrison Butker missed a field goal to swing the momentum to the Eagles. Hurts would hit Brown on a 45 yard TD five plays later.
KC bounced back after a rare Hurts mistake, when he coughed up a fumble and Boton ran it back a TD on a scoop and score.
PHI would get a couple late first half scores, first on a Hurts 4 yard TD and then on a Elliott FG to end the half.
Ri-Ri time!

First Half Summary
The Eagles have dominated the first half, especially in the second quarter. The score may not reflect that, but the time on the field will. Patrick Mahomes was only on the field a total of eight minutes.
Mahomes re-aggravates ankle
Late in the second quarter, Mahomes was tackled by the ankle and went hobbling off the field. He's got some time now at the half to work on it, but it's not a good sign for the Chiefs heading into halftime.

Mahomes' ankle not so good now...
Patrick Mahomes under pressure was tackled by T.J. Edwards and he took him down by the ankle. Yes, the ankle he sprained three weeks ago.
This is the first time all game it's looked like Mahomes was affected at all by the ankle sprain, but after being tugged and brought down by the ankle, he went limping off the field. The medical team will have a look and work on him a bit, but that's not good news for the Chiefs.
It's likely Mahomes will play through the pain as long as he's cleared to do so, but that 100% just got further away.
The Eagles get the ball back at their 43 after a a 27 yard punt return and Hurts ahs fantastic field position with 1:22 to go in the half.

Hurts may have had a fumble, but I'd say he's otherwise having a pretty good game. The Eagles went for it on 4th and 5 and of course, it was Hurts who rushed it for the first down.
He's got 57 yards rushing and a touchdown so far in this game.
He had a shoulder injury at the end of the regular season, but that doesn't seem to be causing him any issues tonight (nor did it at all in the playoffs).

Bolton's had two sacks and two interceptions on the season and now he's had his Super Bowl moment.
The Chiefs D evens the game
Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton saved the day just as the Eagles were looking to make it a two-score game with that 36-yard fumble recovery touchdown.
Bolton's had two sacks and two interceptions on the season and now he's had his Super Bowl moment.
Hurst just lost it. He wasn't hit. The ball popped out as he was swtiching the ball from one hand to the other. We are all tied up in Arizona.
TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS!!!
After a false start on 3rd and 1, Hurts lost the ball and Bolton scooped it and scored for a TD and we are all tied up on a mistake from one of the most mistake free QBs in the NFL this year.
KC tie it up at 14-14 with 9:39 left in the first half.
Gainwell gets it back on 2nd and short and he is stopped at the line of scrimmage.
3rd and 1 from the KC 47.
Gainwell broke a few tackles and picked up 9 yards on first down.
2nd and 1 from the KC 47.
Hurts was pressures and ended up zigging and zagging while running backwards and freed himself up enough to find Pascal for 9 yards and a first down.
1st and 10 from the PHI 44.
Mahomes ankle sprain
Patrick Mahomes injured his ankle in the Divisional Round just three weeks ago. It was a high ankle sprain, which isn't just a minimal injury. Mahomes is a tough player. He sat out for a little bit in that game after the sprain, but played through it for the second half, bringing the Chiefs to victory. He then led them to victory a week later in the AFC Championship game.
How is Mahomes' ankle holding up now?
Now that he's been able to rest for two weeks and focus on rehabbing it, Mahomes said ahead of the game that he was in great shape and didn't expect the sprain to be an issue during the Super Bowl at all. However, he also said that he wouldn't know for certain what shape he's in until gameday.
It's gameday now and Mahomes seems to be doing just fine. He's already rushed for eight yards and doesn't look to be struggling at all. Good news for the Chiefs.
Hurts looking for Goedert on the screen pass over the middle and he is dropped after a short gain of 3 yards.
3rd and 8 from the PHI 35.
On first down Sanders is wrapped up in the backfield for a loss of 1.
2nd and 11 from the PHI 32.
The Chiefs will get the ball back from their 33 yard line after Covey returned the punt 8 yards.
1st and 10 from the PHI 33.
Mahomes looking for Smith-Schuster and that pass fell imcomplete. There looked like there might have been some contact on the WR, but no flag flies.
4th and 8 from the KC 27.
Mahomes finds Smith-Schuster on a short pass over the middle for 5 yards.
3rd and 8 from the KC 27.
Can the Chiefs even the score in the second quarter?
The Eagles took off with that last one just as soon as the 2nd quarter started and now they're becoming even more aggressive on defense. There is a reason they're the best at forcing 3rd downs...Chiefs are at 3rd and 8 now but if anyone can get it, Mahomes can.
The Chiefs get the ball back at the 25 after the Hurts bomb and Pacheco is swarmed in the backfield for a loss of 3.
2nd and 12 from the KC 22.
TOUCHDOWN PHILLY!!!
PHI start the second quarter from the KC 45, and Hurts goest deep for Brown who shook off defenders and made the finger tip grab in the end zonefor a 45 yard TD BOMB!!!
PHI lead 14-7 after the big play to start the quarter!!!
END OF FIRST QUARTER
At the end of the 1st quarter, we have so far seen an aggressive offensive game with both teams scoring touchdowns on their opening drives and doing so rather quickly and rather easily.
Mahomes is showing no signs that his ankle is bothering him and Hurts scored the opening rushing TD. Both quarterbacks are looking healthy and strong. We're in for a close game.
Hurts hits Brown on a slant pattern for a first down and a gain of 7 yards and that brings us to the end of the first quarter.
Entertaining first 15 from Arizona. We are tied up at 7-7 after a rushing TD from Hurts and a passing TD from Mahomes to Kelce.
Goedert gets the pitch play out of the shot gun and he takes it from left to right for a gain of 5 yards.
2nd and 5 from the PHI 48.
Clark jumped offside and that will move the chains for the Eagles. First mistake of the game for the Chiefs.
1st and 10 from the PHI 43.
Hurts tried it again, but this time he is stuffed at the line for no gain.
3rd and 5 from the PHI 37.
So after the missed field goal Philly get the ball at the 32 and Hurts takes the RPO 5 yards on the left side.
2nd and 5 from the PHI 37.
Travis Kelce is just too good
The Chiefs didn't come away with points on this drive, but Kelce just keeps proving his athletic ability to run any route, avoid defenders, find the open space, and get down the field. It was he who got them 22 yards down the field before the Eagles forced the field goal attempt.
MISSED FIELD GOAL!!
Butker DOINKED IT from 42 yards out!!! It was driting left from the time it left his foot and the sound of the ball hitting the post rings around State Farm Stadium!
We remain tied at 7-7 with 2:24 to go in the opening quarter.
Mahomes tried his pattented shovel pass as he was falling to the ground but it fell incomplete.
4th and 3 and the Chiefs will kick the field goal.
Quick snap from Mahomes and he finds McKnnon in the flat for a 7 yard gain.
3rd and 3 from the PHI 24.

Mahomes throws it away as the Philly pressure got to him for the first time today.
2nd and 10 from the PHI 31.
Mahomes over the middle and he finds Kelce again!!! That strike goes for 22 yards on Kelce's thrid catch of the game.
1st and 10 from the PHI 31.
Pacheco gets a gain of a couple, but an Illegal hands to the face penalty against PHI will give the Chiefs a first down.
1st and 10 from the KC 47.
Mahomes with a screen pass to Gray and he follows his blockers for a gain of 6 on first down.
2nd and 4 from the KC 40.
Toney returns the punt 12 yards to the KC 34 and the Chiefs will have a chance to take the lead on their second drive.
Hurts was pressured out of the pocket and ended up throwing it away to avoid a sack, or wose.
4th and 14 and the Eagles will put after getting backed up by the holding call on first down.
Ahh, there's the defense!
It's a lot harder to get the 1st down when you lose yards to penalties. Defense is finally showing up as Frank Clark put the pressure on Hurts. The Eagles were forced to punt it as they were too far to even attempt a field goal.
Hurts finds Smith on the left side and that goes for a short gain of 5 yards.
3rd and 14 from the PHI 21.
Gainwell gets a yard on first down, but the Eagles are playing behind the sticks early in this drive.
2nd and 19 from the PHI 19.
Hurts found Gainwell in the flat on first down, but a pass interfenence on Pascal will bring the Eagles back 10 yards.
1st and 20 from the PHI 15.
Fireworks all around in the first eight minutes of this game and the Eagles will take over from the 25 to start their second possession.
Where is the defense?
The Eagles and Chiefs both came out and scored on their opening drives. The Eagles did it in just over 4 minutes and the Chiefs came out fast, scoring in just over 3. The Eagles had no answer for Travis Kelce, one of the hardest players in the league to defend against. I think we're going to see a high-scoring game tonight.
TOUCHDOWN CHIEFS!!!
Mahomes loops a ball over the top and right into the hands of Kelce on a 18 yard TD pass to tie up the game. Who else was Mahomes' going to go to for his first TD on Super Bowl Sunday?
We are all tied up after two possessions.
Pacheco busts a run up the middle for 24 yards and the Chiefs are deep inside PHI territory.
1st and 10 from the 20.
Mahomes showing his ankle is doing just fine with an 8 yard scramble for a first down.
1st and 10 from the KC 48.
It's been an aggressive game from the start. The Eagles came out with a touchdown on their opening drive and now we're seeing the Chiefs heading down the field and the Eagles D, as good as they are, haven't been able to stop them yet either. The Chiefs are at the 20!
Kelce introduces himself into this game with a 20 yard pick up on a deep ball on the let side.
1st and 10 from the KC 48.
Pacheco gets the opening handoff and he picks up 3 yards on the first down run.
2nd and 7 from the KC 28.
Here comes the NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, starting their drive from the 25.
The Chiefs took a chance by giving the Eagles the ball first, knowing how good of a team they are on the opening drive of the game. It came back to bite them. Now it's their turn.
TOUCHDOWN EAGLES!!!
From inside the one, and everyone knew who it was going to, but the Chiefs couldn't stop the Jalen Hurts QB sneak. He had 13 regular season rushing TDs so we shouldn't be surprised he opens the Super Bowl up with a TD.
Eagles lead 7-0 after the first possession of the afternoon.
The rules in the NFL are so nit-picky. Just the elbow being down before the ball meant that what looked like a touchdown wasn't actually a touchdown. Of course, a team like Philly has no problem getting the TD on the second chance, but you really have to be precise in this league.
Gainwell looked like he got in and the refs raised their hand to signal a TD, but after a quick review the ball was marked down just short of the goal line, but that run was enought for the first down.
1st and Goal from inside the one.
Scott gets swallowed up for a loss of two yards and the Eagles have a 3rd and short coming up.
3rd and 3 from the KC3.
Scott up the gut for a gain of 9 yards and the Eagles are knocking on the door.
2nd and 1 from the KC 2.
Hurts finds Smith for a third time on this drive and he breaks a tackle for a pick up of 23!
1st and 10 from the KC 11.
We talked a bit about today's game being decided by the defense and it looks like it may just be the case with offenses like these two. The Eagles are aggressive on offense and the Chiefs defense so far haven't had an answer to it. The Eagles are already in the red zone on their first drive.
Hurts finding his tight end Goedert for a first down with a 13 yard pick up.
1st and 10 from the KC 34.
Hurts tucks and runs after feeling the pressure and moves the chains with a 11 yard scramble.

Sanders gets the opening handoff to start the game and he pops the run outside, but gets crushed and almost lost the ball after a loss of 1.
2nd and 11 from the PHI 24
SUPER BOWL LVII IS UNDERWAY FROM ARIZONA!!!
The Philadelphia Eagles receive first and they will take it from the 25 after the touchback.
The Chiefs won the toss and differed. The Eagles will get the ball first in just a few minutes! Get ready everyone. It's showtime!
Both teams are on the field, the Anthem has been sung and now it's time for the coin toss, which won't be flipped by Donna Kelce.... (bohhhhhh)
Next up the coin toss. Here's why teams defer.
Always drama State Farm Stadium
State Farm Stadium has seen it’s fair share of Super Bowls. It was opened back in 2003, and since then has had NCAA Football national title games and two Super Bowls. If history has told us anything, it’s that we should get ready for a historic game tonight. The first of the two Super Bowls was won by the Giants after David Tyree’s iconic catch to beat the New England Patriots in 2008. The second one was one by the Patriots when Malcom Butler.
Chris Stapleton singing national anthem
Chris Stapleton sang a country rendition of the national anthem with a twang. There is also a special moment this year as theNavy did a flyover to celebrate the women in the Navy flying for 50 years.
America the Babayface
Babyface just came out and crushed America the Beautiful in a national anthem appetizer. Smooth as always Mr. Babyface.
BabyFace sings America the Beautiful
BabyFace is singing a beautiful rendition of America the Beautiful. Indeed he does still look much younger than 64 and still sounds as good as ever!
National anthem coming up next
Country star ChrisStapleton will be singing the national anthem this year. That's coming up next!
Chiefs nation stand up
Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are on the field at State Farm Stadium and we are just minutes away from kickoff!
Eagles fans already causing chaos
The Eagles haven't even won anything yet, but they are already out on the streets flipping cars and wreaking havoc. The attempts by the city to stop them getting too crazy by greasing light poles were in vain. There's no stopping the Philly fans...
Rihanna ready to rock State Farm Stadium
The game is secondary for many people on Super Bowl Sunday. The casual fan, or people who aren’t even fans of the football will tune in tonight to watch Rhianna perform during the halftime show. It’s her first time performing in seven years, and she couldn’t have picked a bigger stage to make her big return.
Pre-game show
It's the pre-game show... you can get even more details on the singers and the songs with Reem, over on her live feed.
A very special guest in the house
Damar Hamlin just made his first on field apperance since his near death experience in Cincinnati. The Bills DB was accompanied by the medical staff that helped save his life. Incredible moment for Hamlin, the Bills and the sports world after we all sat, watched and hoped for the best during the December Monday night game at PayCor Stadium.
Prop bets tonight
The Super Bowl is synonymous with a few things. Football is obviously at the forefront. Food, and parties go hand-in-hand with the big game, but gambling might the best compliment to Super Bowl Sunday. Here are some of the top prop bets to take tonight.
- Coin Toss
- Color of the Gatorade shower
- Chip company with first commercial
- Will a player propose after the game
- Who will be mentioned first during the Super Bowl MVP speech
Hiurts Hunting for history
Jalen Hurts has already made history by becoming the youngest Eagles QB ever to reach a Super Bowl. Now he can go down as NFL immortality as one of the youngest QB’s to ever win a Super Bowl. Ben Rothlisberger was 23 years and 11 months old when he and the Steelers beat the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XL.
History being made over State Farm Stadium
Today is a special day, not just because the Eagles and the Chiefs are playing in the Super Bowl, but for the first time ever, there will be an all-woman fly over during the National Anthem.
Steichen on the move?
Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen was a nominee for Assistant Coach of the Year, and when you are in that discussion teams come knocking. Reports today out of Indianapolis claim that Steichen has accepted a the Colts head coaching job. I may be talking out of my butt here, but I never like when an assistant coach accepts a job before a big game. There is no doubt he has been in contact with the Colts front office over the last few days, and for me that takes the focus off of the present goal.
Philly's dominant D
Which is better? The Philly offense or the Philly defense? They are such a balanced team, it’s a tough question to answer, but when you look at the kind of season the defense had it’s hard to go against them. The fact that they added Robert Quinn midseason only adds to that argument, and when you compare them to some historically great defenses they match up. They are just eight sacks away from breaking the 1985 Chicago Bears record for sacks in a season.
Pacheco's Philly roots
Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Isaiah Pacheco grew up in New Jersey, just miles away from Philadelphia’s stadium. He may have gone to a few Eagles games when he was a kid, but tonight he has a chance to break the hearts of friends and family who have been life long Eagles fans.
No Tyreek, No Problem
Believe it or not, there was a lot of question, and even doubt surrounding Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs coming into this season. KC traded away Tyreek Hill who was one of Patrick Mahomes top downfield weapons. How would they respond? Would they be as potent on the offensive end? Would Mahomes be the same quarterback? Mahomes was better than ever, and the KC offense was even more dynamic as Mahomes was as unpredictable as ever. Hill will spend tonight watching his old team play in their third Super Bowl in less than a decade.
AJ BROWN AND ROBERT QUINN
Last year the LA Rams made a midseason move to show they were All In when it came to their Super Bowl Run. They brought in Odell Beckham Jr. halfway through the season, and the dynamic WR made a big impact on the Rams offense. This year the Eagles made a move that catapulted their offense into one of the most dangerous units in the league when they brought in A.J. Brown from Tennessee. In the middle of the season they made a trade with the Chicago Bears to bring in Robert Quinn, making an already deadly defense even more potent.
No accolades for Eagles
The NFL awards ceremony took place over the weekend and to many peoples surprise, there wasn’t a single Eagle to win an award. Hurts was a candidate for the MVP and Offensive POY. Shane Steichen was in the running for Assistant COY, but neither won. In one hand this could be disappointing for Eagles nation, but it speaks to how complete this team is. This is a team that compliments each other in every position. There are starts, but no one outshines another and for that reason perhaps the Eagles were overlooked when it came to the awards ceremony.
MVPahomes
For the second time in his young career, Patrick Mahomes was named the league MVP in this year’s NFL Awards ceremony. He won it back in 2018, which was the same year he won the Super Bowl with the Chiefs. Tonight he looks to follow up his second MVP season with a second Super Bowl win. Winning a Super Bowl puts you in an elite quarterback category, winning two puts you in amongst the NFL immortals.
Hurst Stats
In just his third NFL season, Jalen Hurts exploded on to the scene. Just a few season after getting drafted Hurts led the Eagles to the Super Bowl after a season in which he there for a total of 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 15 regular season games, not to mention his 13 rushing TDs which was good enough for a tie for second amount the NFL’s best running backs.
Mahomes stats
Patrick Mahomes maybe the best quarterback in football, and certainly backed that claim up with a fabulous season. He led the league in passing yards (5,250 yards) and touchdowns (41 TDs) while throwing just 12 interceptions all year, and finished .3 points behind Tua Tagovailoa with a 105.2 Rating this season.
Brady hangs it up
Tom Brady stole the headlines for a few days in the hours following the Conference Title games. On February 1st he alerted the world that he would be retiring for a second and final time in a short and sweet message on Instagram. The leaves the game as the best footballs player to ever play the game, having won seven Super Bowls, more than any one or any franchise in NFL history.
Most Super Bowl wins
The Eagles are going for their second Lombardi Trophy, while the Chiefs have a chance at their third Super Bowl in franchise history. They would still have a long way to go to catch up with the rest of the pack at the top of the list. Here is the all time list of most Super Bowls won in NFL history:
1) Tom Brady (7-3)
2) Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2)
2) New England Patriots (6-5)
4) Dallas Cowboys (5-3)
4) San Francisco 49ers (5-2)
The Reid Bowl
For as much as this Super Bowl has become the Kelce Bowl, we could equally call it the Reid Bowl. Before his time in KC, Andy Reid was the head football coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. He was in Philly for 14 years before leaving the City of Brotherly Love for redder pastures. In that time he took the Eagles to a Super Bowl while winning 130 regular season games and 10 playoff games in his tenure in Philadelphia. In KC, he has won 117 regular season games, 11 post seasons and his first Super Bowl as a head coach and is looking to add to that tally against his old team tonight. Our Luis Guillermo Vazquez has the full story.
Momma Kelce
Speaking of their parents, Donna Kelce, made headlines after the Kelce Bowl was set up with the Eagles and the Chiefs winning their conference titles. She has the unenviable task of trying of being impartial tonight with both of her sons on the field playing for different teams. Fans around the country wanted to involve her even more than she already is involved in this game, by creating a petition on Change.org to get Donna to flip the coin at the start of the game. After hundreds of thousands of signatures, the petitions were unfortunately ignored and the coin flip will not be conducted by Mama Kelce.
The Kelce Bowl
For the first time ever, two brothers will be going head to head in the Super Bowl. Jason and Travis Kelce won’t be on the field at the same time, since both play on the offensive side of the ball, but Jason’s Eagles and Travis’ Chiefs will be facing off tonight and only one of the brothers will be lifting the Lombardi Trophy tonight. Both already have a Super Bowl title on their resumé, but this one might mean a little more considering it will be for family bragging rights. Their poor parents.
The Big Ticket
It’s the biggest ticket in American sports. Every year, a seat inside the stadium on Super Bowl Sunday seems to get higher and high. The cheapest seats in State Farm Stadium are going for $4,249 according to Ticket IQ. The average price of tickets runs $6,783, and if you are looking for the big baller tickets, be ready to shell out $28,788 for the most expensive premium ticket in Glendale, Arizona. Our Andy Restrepo has the whole story
Chiefs historic Super Bowl past
Kansas City’s Super Bowl legacy goes all the way back to the first ever Super Bowl in 1967. They met the Green Bay Packers and saw Bart Star and the Pack lift the first ever Lombardi Trophy. Tonight marks the fifth time ever the Chiefs are playing on Super Bowl Sunday, and they have a record of 2-2. Three years after their loss to the Packers, KC returned to the big stage and defeated the Minnesota Vikings 23-7 for their first ever Lombardi Trophy. They would take a long hiatus from playing in the NFL title game, but Patrick Mahomes returned them to glory in Super Bowl LIV with a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers. The made the Super Bowl two years ago, but fell to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-9.
Eagles looking for second Lombardi Trophy
This will be the Eagles fourth Super Bowl in Franchise history. They are 1-2 in their previous three trips to the Super Bowl, with their only Lombardi Trophy coming back in Super Bowl LII when they beat Tom Brady and the New England Patriots 41-33. Before their win five years ago, they had a sad history of Super Bowl Sundays, losing to the Oakland Raiders 27-10 in Super XV, and then in Super Bowl XXXIX when the Tom Brady and the Patriots beat the Eagles 24-21.
KC back at the Super Bowl
The Chiefs have been in the spotlight ever since Patrick Mahomes took over as the starter in Kansas City. They won four of their first five, but there were still a lot of questions surrounding KC. They lost regular season games to the Bengals and the Bills who were considered their biggest competition coming into the year. After clinching the top seed in the AFC, they got their revenge on the Bengals following a Divisional Round win over the Jaguars to set up a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship. It was tight throughout the entirety of the conference title game, but Mahomes, and the revamped KC defense did just enough to set up a third trip to the Super Bowl in the Patrick Mahomes era.
Bradley Cooper gets Eagles fans hyped!
One of Philly's most famous fans is in attendance at Super Bowl LVII and he's working the crowd!
Philly's path to the Super Bowl
The Eagles came into this season under the radar. No one outside of Philly expected this team to be where they are, but after winning their first eight games they jumped into the Super Bowl conversation. Their first loss came against their division rival, the Washington Commanders, but Jalen Hurts and the Eagles rattled off another five straight before the Eagles gunslinger injured his shoulder and they lost the two games they were without their QB1 under center. Hurts returned for the final regular season game and defeated the Giants to lock up the top seed in the NFC. After a first round bye they squared up with New York for the third time this season and blew the Giants out in a 38-7 thumping in the Divisional Round. Their conference championship game against the Niners was easier than expected after seeing Brock Purdy get knocked out of the game in the opening San Fran drive and they cruised into the Super Bowl in a 31-7 drubbing of the Niners to get to their second Super Bowl in the last five years.
Tonight's odds
According to Bet365.com, Super Bowl LVII couldn’t be any tighter. The Eagles come in as one point favorites with the Over/Under set at 51.
This one is almost too close to call, but with how good the Eagles have looked all season I have to take Philly. They can beat you in so many ways. They are the most complete team in football, and if they can figure out a way to contain, not stop ,but contain Patrick Mahomes I think they take this game.
How the NFC and AFC were won
The Eagles has the top record in the NFL from wire-to-wire. They started the season with 8 straight wins, and if Jalen Hurts didn’t injure his shoulder in the finals weeks of the season they very well could have been a one loss team going into the playoffs. They finished the season as 14-3 and won the NFC East and got the top seed in the conference. The Chiefs were the pace setters in the AFC all season, fighting off the Bills and the Bengals to get the top seed in the conference after finishing the season 14-3 and winning what would turn out as an underwhelming AFC West.
The MVP looking for SB #2
Patrick Mahomes was born for big moments. Since he was drafted by the Chiefs, he has been in the spotlight and it didn’t take long after having his name called by commisioner Goddell on Draft Day to propel himself into the “best QB in the NFL” conversation. With Tom Brady retiring, there is an open vacancy for that title. A win tonight, would lock him in as the best QB in the league after winning a second MVP in a season in which he lits his second Lomabrdi Trophy, not to mention his fantastic cameos in the State Farm commercials.
Hurts is in the building
It wasn’t long ago where there was a lot of doubt surrounding the future of Jalen Hurts in Philly. He didn’t convince everyone in the City of Brotherly Love in his first two seasons, but in his second season as the orchestrator of Nick Siriani’s he convinced everyone in Eagles nation that he is the QB of today and of the future. He was in the conversation for the MVP and tonight he has a chance to return the Eagles to glory tonight in Arizona.
Defense key to Super Bowl win
The Eagles and Chiefs battle it out in the Super Bowl tonight and it’s likely going to be a close game that comes down to the defense.
Chief's last game
All eyes were on the injured ankle of Patrick Mahomes heading into the AFC Championship game. He was almost knocked out of the Divisional Round game against the Jags, but came back with a high ankle sprain and led the Chiefs past Jacksonville. The league MVP was hobbled, but under center in the AFC Championship against the Cincinnati Bengals. It was expected to be a shootout between Mahomes and Joe Burrow, but the offenses got off to a slow start.
KC kicked a field goal for the first and only points of the first quarter, and in the second quarter Mahomes hit his favorite target Travis Kelce on a 14 yard TD pass to go into the halftime break up 13-6. The Bengals started the second half by scoring a TD on their opening possession of the third quarter, but the Chiefs answered the Tee Higgins touchdown catch, with a Marquez Valdes-Scantling TD catch to take 20-13.
The boat started to rock a bit at the end of the third quarter, when Mahomes was strip sacked and six played later Samaje Perine tied the game up with a 2 yard TD run. The defense stepped up for KC and allowed Mahomes to work his magic with 30 seconds to go in the game. A 5 yard scramble by Mahomes turned into a 20 yard gain after a late hit by Joseph Ossai moved the Chiefs into FG range and Harrison Butker drilled the 45 yard game winning field goal with 3 seconds on the clock.
Philly's last game
It was quite literally a blood bath in the NFC Championship as the Eagles crushed the San Francisco 49ers who saw their third string quarterback go down in the first drive of the game. So there the Niners were in the conference title game, with their 4th string QB, Josh Jacobs, under center. Jacobs would go on to take a shot that put him in concussion protocol so he was sidelined as well. San Fran kept it close for about 25 minutes, but Philly pulled away at the end of the second quarter. With the score tied at 7-7, Miles Sanders ran a 13 yard TD in with under two minutes to go in the half, and then a muffed snap led to a Philly fumble recovery and less than a minutes later Boston Scott stretched the first half lead to 21-7 with a 10 yard TD run.

Who will come out on top Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs or the Philadelphia Eagles led by Jalen Hurst?

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes' contract breakdown
Just to go back to Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his salary for a moment. I hope you have your tissues at the ready as your eyes are going to be watering when you see some of these numbers.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of how much Mahomes earns, which is the biggest amount for a single contract ever signed in the NFL. Must be big then.
How does that compare to some of the world's other best-paid sports stars? Gidget is here with the answer.
Reid "may retire" after Super Bowl
Interesting news coming from FOX's NFL-focused journalists Jay Glazer who says Chiefs' coach Andy Reid may retire from coaching after the Super Bowl. If his team wins, he couldn't really ask for a better way to go out, could he?
It's impossible to get away from the Patrick Mahomes vs Jalen Hurts match-up, for a number of reasons. As we said earlier, it's the first time in the history of the Super Bowl that two black quarterbacks will start on opposing sides.
“To be on the world stage and have two Black quarterbacks start in the Super Bowl, I think it’s special, and I’ve learned more and more about the history of the Black quarterback since I’ve been in this league," Mahomes said in the run-up to the game.
There's no doubting the impact that Mahomes has had in NFL over the course of the last few years. Hurts is slightly newer to the scene but has also wowed us all with some of his performances. The two are equally as important to their respective teams but how much do they make in Kansas and Philadelphia respectively? Let's just say Hurts is due a pay raise...
Meet the coaches: the Kansas City Chiefs' Andy Reid
You see everything I said about Nick Sirianni below? Well, pretty much the opposite is true for Andy Reid.
Of course, one of the most interesting sub-plots in this Super Bowl is that Reid is going up against the team he coached for 13 years between 1999 and 2012. In his time with the Eagles, despite receiving various coach of the year awards, he only once reached the season's showpiece, however, losing to New England Patriots at Super Bowl XXXIX.
Reid moved to the Chiefs in 2013 and finally got his hands on the Lombardi Trophy in 2020 at Super Bowl LIV, as the Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, with Patrick Mahomes named MVP. Both Reid and Mahomes would settle for a repeat performance today.
Here's more on Reid's long and distinguished career from William.
Meet the coaches: the Philadelphia Eagles' Nick Sirianni
I gave you the lowdown a little earlier on the mascots, now here are two guys who are just ever-so-slightly less important (just kidding, guys, if you're reading).
41-year-old Nick Sirianni is the relative rookie on the touchline compared to his opposite number. The New York-state native is in his first job as head coach in the NFL and as a result is going to his first Super Bowl. Sirianni is 14-3 with the Eagles, with a 31-7 thrashing of the San Francisco 49ers the most impressive achievement of his time in charge so far.
Jalen Hurts is Super Bowl ready!
If this little clip doesn't say "cool, calm and collected" then I don't know what does. Jalen rocking the pink/purple number, that I don't many could pull off. I certainly won't be trying.
The eyes of the world will be on Hurts in a few hours' time, although you wouldn't know it. Maybe someone should tell him.
Super Bowl LVII: the Kelce family final
Given just how many youngsters aspire to be professional sportsmen and women, it's quite incredible to think that this kind of thing happens. It's obviously in the genes.
As I'm sure you'll know, Jason and Travis Kelce are about to make history as the first brothers ever to play against each other in the Super Bowl.
Center Jason, the elder of the two, has been on the Philadelphia Eagles' roster since 2011, has been selected as a First-team All-Pro five times and elected to the Pro Bowl on six occasions. And, of course, he won Super Bowl LII in February 2018.
Travis, a tight end, has played for the Chiefs since 2013 and made the All-Pro first time four times, been elected to the Pro Bowl on eight occasions and won Super Bowl LIV in February 2020.
Similar achievements throughout their career but something's got to give in Glendale. The next family dinner could be awkward.
Now, I don't what you to accuse me of being biased, so in the interest of impartiality....
There's a little less to tell you in terms of the Kansas City Chiefs' colours but what if I told you that the Kansas City Chiefs weren't originally from Kansas City? That makes no sense. Why would they be called that, then? Well, they weren't.
Logos have changed along with the name, although the Chiefs' red has very much remained. Here's more from Paul.
As hinted at below, Eagles mascot Swoop didn't actually used to be green, which would've made him an entirely inappropriate choice for the team back in the day. Although saying that...have the Eagles always played in green? What's that, they haven't? Well, I never.
As seems to have been the case in the history of a whole host of sports teams, the Eagles started off playing in a different colour to the one that we now associate with them. You might need to ask your grandparents (or maybe great-grandparents) about it though.
Here's a little bit of a history lesson on the Eagles' background from Paul.
Meet the mascots: Swoop, Philadelphia Eagles
"Swoop, one of the most beloved and iconic mascots in the NFL, is known for his fun-loving personality, being the centre of attention, and entertaining fans of all ages."
This is literally the way Swoop, the Eagles mascot, is described on the NFL teams website. I guess you're always going to be biased towards your own mascot...
How did Swoop come about? When did he get a makeover? What colour did he used to be? How much does it cost to hire him for an even? And, most importantly why is there an inflatable version of him? All answered by Joe here!
Meet the mascots: the controversial KC Wolf
Unbelievably, we've got this far and not had any mascot chat. Time for that to change.
First up, the Chiefs' KC Wolf, who you might remember from tackling a drunk fan at the 2001 Pro Bowl and generally being a pretty upbeat kind of soul. Unfortunately, however, he also has a rather disturbing dark side to him (as well as a not-very-up-to-date Twitter account).
Distractify reported that “native American groups across the nation have asked various sports teams, such as the Washington Commanders (formerly the Washington Redskins) and baseball team the Cleveland Guardians (formerly the Cleveland Indians), to change their team names and mascots to reduce harm and cultural appropriation.”
What does that have to do with KC Wolf? Here's Joe to tell you more.
History being made at the Super Bowl
It's obviously been widely reported that this is the first time in history that two black quarterbacks will start in the Super Bowl.
Doug Williams, now a senior advisor at the Washington Redskins, became the first black QB to ever win the event back at Super Bowl XXII in 1987 and was named MVP for good measure. On that occasion, the Redskins thrashed the Denver Brancos by 42-10.
The Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes is, of course, no stranger to the Super Bowl having been named MVP in his team's victory over the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LIV in February 2020.
This, however, will be the Jalen Hurts' first taste of the Super Bowl. The 24-year-old Eagles QB was named to the Pro Bowl for the 2022season... the Super Bowl is the next logical step, right?
Chiefs' Nick Allegretti already a winner!
Every big sporting event needs a feel-good story and this has to be the one for this year's Super Bowl!
What a day for Kansas City Chiefs guard Nick Allegretti! He's already won one Super Bowl (LIV), of course, but he'll remember this one even more fondly, even if he ends up on the losing side. He's got twin girls to go home to after the game in Glendale (good luck, Nick). He'll be hoping to get a couple of mini-rings made for them too.
Why does the Super Bowl use Roman numerals?
Just as I was typing that last post, I got thinking about how intriguing it is that the Super Bowl uses Roman numerals to number their events. Why on earth do they do that? Nobody else does that, do they? To make things even more fascinating, it wasn't always the case, as the first few editions of the Super Bowl used Cardinal numbers.
So, why the change? Here's Jeffrey and Calum to explain.
State Farm Stadium hosts its third Super Bowl
We're expecting just shy of 80,000 fans to pack into State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona for Super Bowl LVII. This will be the third time the event has been held at this particular venue, let's have a quick look at the two previous games.
Superbowl XLII on 3 February 2008: the New York Giants defeated the previously unbeaten New England Patriots - Tom Brady and all - by 17-14.
Seven years later, on 1 February 2015,Brady and the Patriots enjoyed Arizona ever so slightly more as they returned to defeat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24. Brady in particular has fond memories of this one as he was named MVP.
Which of the Eagles or Chiefs will get a Super Bowl championship ring?
You've all seen the weird and wonderful Super Bowl rings that have been made over the years I'm sure. But who gets one?
The short answer is that "it depends". Each Super Bowl winner is able to order 150 rings and basically dish them out as they see fit. As you'd expect, there are some obvious candidates who probably get them before everybody else does, including the playing and coaching staff. What about practice squad members, surely they deserve a bit of love? And those unlucky souls who get injured right before Super Bowl (you all remember Carson Wentz)?
Rihanna NFL's latest Barbaian star
Unless you've been living Goodness knows where, you'll know that Rihanna is going to be the start of the Super Bowl halftime show. And that got us thinking...which other Barbadian stars have lit up the NFL in the past (possibly in a slightly different way)?
Four men from Barbados have played NFL before:
- Cornerback Sam Seale was the first Barbadian to play in the NFL mainly for the Los Angeles Raiders in the 1980s and 1990s. He now works as a scout for the Green Bay Packers.
- Cornerback Robert Baileywon the Super Bowl twice, once with the Dallas Cowboys in 1995 and then with Baltimore Ravens in 2000.
- Offensive tackle Ramon Harewood played for the Ravers and then the Denver Broncos between 2010 and 2014, winning Super Bowl XLVII with the former.
- Running back Elvis Joseph became the first Bajan to play in the NFL when he turned out for the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2001 to 2003.
Aussie Eagles
The Philadelphia Eagles will likely be fielding Australian Jordan Mailata at left tackle. He's not a small lad, listed at 6'8" and weighing in at 365 pounds. He was spotted after NFL execs saw footage of him plowing through opponents playing Rugby League - he played for Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and South Sydney Rabbitohs before joining the NFL through the International Player Pathway Program. He's originally from Bankstown, New South Wales.
He might well be joined by fellow Aussie Arryn Siposs, from Melbourne, Victory, with the punter being activated from injured reserve and likely to start ahead of Brett Kern, who has been on duty since Siposs injured his ankle against the New York Giants back in Week 14.
Eagles' locker room
That luscious green of the Eagles' uniform is in fact Midnight Green. Any guesses for the name of the Chiefs' red?
Medium candy apple red. Pat on the back if you got that one.
Super Bowl wins for the Chiefs and Eagles
The Eagles have won one Super Bowl in their history, beating the Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII, though this is their fourth appearance.
The Chiefs have won two Super Bowls, in 1969 vs the Minnesota Vikings (23-7) and in 2019, with current QB Mahomes in charge, against the San Francisco 49ers 31-20. They also featured in 2020, losing to Brady's Bucs, 31-9.
Super Bowl... or Merger Bowl
Back when the NFL and the AFL were discussing bringing the leagues together and having their best teams compete for a championship there were discussions about what to call the game. ('The Game' was in fact one option, which is neat, if rather stark).
It ended up being called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game for the first two games, yep, really trips off the tongue doesn't it, before Super Bowl became the official name for the third game in 1969 after basically everyone had started calling it that unofficially. (Credit for the name goes to Lamar Hunt of none other than the Kansas City Chiefs who was quoted in the Kansas City Star in 66 saying that was his term for the championship game)
However one name that had been bandied around during the set-up talks was Merger Bowl. Thank goodness we didn't end up with that...
Weather impact on football
While today's Super Bowl doesn't look likely to be in any way affected by the weather, if you're interested in how it DOES affect the game, have a look at this 'Football Weather' Diving into the effects of weather on NFL QB performance, by Josh Mancuso, who rolled up his sleeves and got stuck into the data. The main take away: wind is the biggest factor in driving fantasy points down. Interestingly temperature itself is not a big factor impacting QB performance.
Super Bowl weather
Looks like a pretty good afternoon and evening for a spot of football, with temps in the low to mid 70s at the start of the game, dropping into the mid 60s. It's going to be sunny, though keep one eye on that wind - there might be some gusts, and though they are unlikely to impact the game, that looks like the one element where mother nature could make herself felt. (State Farm Stadium does have a roof, which is closable in 10 minutes, but that's not going to be necessary)
Super Bowl turf
Local Phoenix grass for tonight's match up between the Chiefs and the Eagles, and you've got to love it getting to go outside every morning for a soak in the sun.
Eagles and Chiefs - mirror images
There's really not much to separate these two sides coming into the Super Bowl. In fact the similarities are almost ridiculous. They have the same 16-3 record, they've scored the SAME amount of points (546) and have six All-Pro players to their credit. They both also have a Kelce brother. Travis Kelce for the Chiefs and Jason Kelce for the Eagles.
Super Bowl... or Superb Owl
How many Superb Owl jokes have you seen so far this Super Bowl season? Admit it, too many. This is from last year, but still rings so true and is most amusing - Jennifer Bubel's rant, I think it's fair to call it a rant, about the 'no, not funny anymore', Superb Owl jokes. (It is sad though if we don't get to see owls, cos they are cool).
Talking of Owls, there was once an American football team called the Owls. The Chicago Owls no less, who played in the Professional Football League of America in 1967, and then in the Continental Football League in 1968 and 1969. Sadly they folded before the start of the 1970 season. Sad twit-twoo.
Cheerleaders at the Super Bowl
Paul Rudder takes a look at the cheerleaders at the Super Bowl, and specifically how much they are paid, which might be a lot less than you'd expect.
Fascinating fact time: six teams don't have cheerleaders. They are: the Bears, Bills, Browns, Giants, Steelers and Packers
Kick-off time for the Super Bowl
The Super Bowl kicks off at
Eastern Time: 6.30 p.m.
Central Time: 5.30 p.m.
Mountain Time: 4.30 p.m. (Local time for the game)
Pacific Time: 3.30 p.m.
But definitely tune in before to catch all the build-up plus the pre-game show featuring:
12-time Grammy Winner Babyface singing "America the Beautiful";
"Lift Every Voice and Sing" from Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph;
and the National Anthem from eight-time Grammy winner Chris Stapleton.
Eagles also ready
The Eagles also go with their QB for their Gameday tweet, and even simpler message, just "IT'S HERE". An hour after publishing they're on 274,000 views, but just 5,500 likes and 1,500 retweets. Another one that's not set the fans on fire.
Chiefs ready for Super Bowl LVII
The Chiefs have Mahomes front and centre of their Super Bowl gameday tweet. An hour since publishing and it's rocking 353,000 views, but only 8,300 likes and 2,000 retweets. Not sure that's absolutely hit the spot with the Chiefs fans.
Super Bowl referee and officiating crew
Tonight's big game between the Chiefs and the Eagles has been entrusted to the eagle-eyed, maybe better make that hawk-eyed, referee Carl Cheffers. The 62-year-old joined the NFL back in 2000 and has been in charge at two previous Super Bowls: Super Bowl LI between the New England Patriots and the Atlanta Falcons in Houston, as well as Super Bowl LV between the Chiefs and the Buccaneers.
More on the Super Bowl referee and officiating crew.
How to watch Super Bowl LVII
Dane will have all the action right here, but if you are also able to have the game on the big screen then here's William Allen's guide to how to do that.
Chiefs vs Eagles - Mahomes vs Hurts
One of the focuses, if not THE MAIN FOCUS of tonight's game is on the two quarterbacks, Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts. The two have been the best QBs and most valuable players this season by a long chalk, with Mahomes sweeping the 2022 NFL MVP on Thursday night at the NFL Honors, he claimed 48 of 50 first-placed votes and stacked up 490 points, Hurts got one of the other first-place votes and came in second with 193 points, meaning he was a lot of people's second choice.
Mahomes is going for his second Super Bowl - he led the Chiefs to victory at Super Bowl LIV - while Hurts is in his first season showdown. Notably this is the first time we've ever had two black quarterbacks in the Super Bowl.
Super Bowl LVII: Chiefs vs Eagles
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Super Bowl 57, with the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the Philadelphia Eagles for the Vince Lombardi trophy.
The game this year is being held at State Farm Stadium, home of the Arizona Cardinals, in Glendale, Arizona. Kickoff is at 6.30 p.m. ET, but there's a whole lot going on before then, so stay with us for all the action.
We will also be covering Rihanna's highly anticipated halftime show.
