The Kelce brothers make NFL Super Bowl history
Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jason Kelce of the Philadelphia Eagles will become the first brothers to play head-to-head in Super Bowl history.
The 57th edition of the Super Bowl (February 12) will see the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs square off, and there will be one family in particular who will live out the Vince Lombardi trophy duel with their hearts in their mouths.
For the first time in NFL history, two siblings on opposing teams will vie for the title: Travis Kelce, the Chiefs’ tight end, and Jason Kelce, the Eagles’ center. Both are key players for their respective teams.
The 2013 edition of the Super Bowl pitted another pair of brothers, the Harbaughs, against each other, but in that case, they were both coaches.
Super Bowl LVII in Arizona, however, will be the first final where two brothers step on the field. “Our mother can’t lose,” said Travis Kelce after the Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.
Their mother, Donna, is arguably the biggest fan of both of the two teams that her children play for. In 2022, she was able to attend two different games on the same day, crossing half the country, to see her boys in the playoffs first-hand. “Your dreams come true. They have been thinking about this since they were 10 years old, although the scenario they planned is that they would play on the same team. There will be a loser, and that will be tough,” Donna commented.
And lose one must, but even so, both Jason and Travis already know what it’s like to win a Super Bowl. The Eagles’ won it in 2018, and in 2020 it was the Chiefs’ turn.
In Arizona, the two brothers will be the stars. Jason Kelce, 35, has been in the NFL for 12 seasons, all of them in Philadelphia, and is one of the best centers in the league, having been selected six times to the Pro Bowl. Travis, 33, was drafted by the Chiefs 10 years ago, and is hands down the best tight end in the NFL, standing currently as the number two player with the most receiving yards and touchdowns in playoff history, chasing the great Jerry Rice.
The relationship between these two brothers is unshakeable, and this year they launched their own podcast, ‘New Heights’, in which they talk weekly about current events in the NFL, which has flown up the charts to make it into the top-10 most listened to podcasts in America.
“I’m done being a Chiefs fan this season,” Jason said when he learned that he would face his brother in the Super Bowl. Because this year, the big game happens to be a family affair.
