After coming into the NFL known as ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ due to being the last pick in the NFL Draft, the 49ers quarterback proved he was anything but, as he proceeded to have a season that belongs in an emotional sports drama film. Sadly, the fairytale campaign came to an end in the saddest of ways, with an injury that now requires surgery.

Brock Purdy set to have second opinion on elbow

Whether you’re a niners fan or not, it was hard to see Brock Purdy forced off the field during Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Reports of course, have since confirmed that Purdy suffered a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his right elbow. The moment came on San Francisco’s sixth play, when Eagles pass rusher Haason Reddick pinned Purdy’s arm just as Purdy was in the middle of throwing the ball. The end result, is that Purdy will now have to undergo surgery, which apparently is something that the 23-year-old wants a second opinion on before going under the knife.

Speaking on Tuesday, the rookie QB made it clear that there are still some i’s to be dotted and t’s to be crossed before he takes the plunge. “I still have some options to weigh and will make a final decision soon,” Purdy said. It’s worth noting, that the franchise’s medical staff have recommended that he have an operation on what seems to be an injury that will require six months of rehab.

Brock Purdy will return next season but will he play?

When considering what’s involved i.e., the prospect of an invasive operation and the lengthy road to recovery before he can take to the field again, Purdy’s hesitance is understandable. “I’ve heard multiple things,” Purdy said. “I think in that scenario that would be six months ready to go. I think in that scenario they said after three months, you can start throwing and getting into a throwing program and getting into a routine. I think six months would be like when you’re allowed to just go and practice and be part of everything. That’s a scenario, but I definitely have some other options, too. So definitely going to go through these MRI scans and make a decision, hopefully soon.”

If there is a silver lining, it’s that Purdy expects to be ready for the start of next season. “I’ll be ready come camp and honestly what matters to me most is being able to play for the season,” he said. On that note, it will definitely be interesting to see what the franchise decides to do about their quarterback situation when the next season rolls around. Consider for a moment, that the 49ers have played a total of four quarterbacks this season, after Jimmy Garoppolo replaced starter, Trey Lance, before going down with an injury himself. Purdy then stepped in and went on a sensational run leading to the NFC Championship Game, where he suffered an injury, left the field and then stepped back in for an injured Josh Johnson who was concussed. Ultimately, Lance who broke his ankle back in Week 2 is close to getting the green light, while Garoppolo is set for free agency. Whatever happens, one could argue that the Niners have the kind of headache that you want when it comes to their QB situation. Watch this space.
