Bill Belichick surprised the sports world when he left the NFL to sign a multi-year contract with the North Carolina Tar Heels in December 2024. Despite stepping away from professional football, the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach continues to spark interest within the league.

Tom Brady, a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, will play a key role in selecting the team’s next head coach following the dismissal of Antonio Pierce. According to NFL Network, the former Patriots quarterback reached out to his longtime head coach to gauge his interest in taking the helm of the Raiders, often referred to as the “Sin City” franchise.

Could Bill Belichick return to the NFL?

The report suggests that Brady believes Belichick’s extensive experience—spanning more than 50 years in the NFL—could be the key to transforming the Raiders into a winning team. Belichick’s illustrious coaching career began in 1975 as a special assistant with the Baltimore Colts.

As the 2025 season approaches, six head coaching vacancies have opened up across the league: the Raiders, the New York Jets, the Chicago Bears, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New England Patriots, and the New Orleans Saints. A return to Foxborough seems highly unlikely, but a move to Jacksonville could be particularly enticing. The Jaguars boast rising star Trevor Lawrence as their franchise quarterback, and owner Shad Khan has shown a willingness to invest in building a competitive team.

Belichick’s contract with North Carolina is noteworthy for its five-year duration and a unique clause requiring a $10 million buyout if he leaves the Tar Heels before June 1, 2025.

If Belichick decides to return to the NFL, he may also have his sights set on breaking the all-time wins record. Don Shula currently holds the record with 328 regular-season wins and 19 playoff victories, while Belichick stands at 302 and 31, respectively.
