Bill Belichick is reportedly poised to sign a $30 million contract to take over as the new head coach of college football team the North Carolina Tar Heels.

How long will Belichick’s UNC contract be?

According to The Athletic reporters Brendan Marks and Ralph Drusso, Belichick is to net the eight-figure sum across a three-year deal with the NCAA Division I team, which competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The emergence of Belichick’s apparent Tar Heels contract details comes on the back of days of reports linking the 72-year-old with a return to coaching with UNC.

Belichick seeks to impose “organizational bible”

On Tuesday, Ollie Connolly of Read Optional reported that Belchick had agreed to join North Carolina on the condition that the Tar Heels accept a 400-page “organizational bible” put together by the former New England Patriots head coach. The document includes stipulations on “structure, payment plans, [and] staffing choices”, Connolly said.

If appointed by UNC, Belichick will replace fellow coaching veteran Mack Brown, who departed the Tar Heels at the end of the 2024 regular season.

Belichick a New England NFL great

A three-time NFL Coach of the Year, Belichick parted company with the Patriots in January, after 24 seasons in charge in Foxborough. Having become Patriots head coach in 2000, Belichick led the franchise to six Super Bowl wins between the 2001 and 2018 seasons.

The Tennessee native has more Super Bowl titles than any other head coach in NFL history. His closest challenger is Chuck Noll, who won four championships with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s.

Belichick also won two Super Bowls, in the 1986 and 1990 seasons, during his time as an assistant coach with the New York Giants.

What was the Tar Heels' 2024 record?

In the last of Brown’s 16 campaigns in charge of the Tar Heels - split across two spells - North Carolina finished with a 6-6 regular-season record.
