Update:

The Kansas City Chiefs lost just three games last season - the last one being the most important of all, the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles. Defeat came as a bitter blow for Andy Reid’s men - not only was it a missed chance to log the first ever ‘three-peat’, it also signals sweeping changes to the roster during the offseason.

The Chiefs have already released seven member of last season’s practice squad: Swayze Bozeman, Cole Christiansen, Anthony Firsker, Keontay Ingram, Nic Jones, Steven Nelson and Montrell Washington have moved on and are now free agents looking for new teams.

Reid is already weighing up the free agency market and the Chiefs will be planning what moves to take in April’s Draft in which they have the No.31 overall pick.

The Chiefs are looking to strengthen the roster with a defensive tackle, an offensive guard, a wide receiver and an edge. Then there is the issue of Travis Kelce.

Kelce is now 35 and about to enter the final year of his contract, which includes a $11.5 million roster bonus which is due to be paid on March 15.

Kelce given a month to make a decision on future

According to The Athletic, the franchise have given the veteran TE more or a less one month to decide what his plans are. They hope to have answer before March 14.

The reason being that Kelce recently hinted that he could be considering moving on. He told the New Heights podcast which he runs with his brother Jason: “It can make you better, it can drive you crazy at the same time, and right now it’s one of those things where it was kind of driving me crazy this year. I’m gonna take some time to figure it out. And I think I owe it to my teammates that if I do come back that it’s gonna be a wholehearted decision and I’m not half-assing it, and I’m fully here for them".

What options are open to Travis Kelce and the Chiefs?

We don’t know what Kelce will decide to do. For now, there are three options: the Chiefs could release him, tie him to an extension, or he could throw in the towel and retire.

The franchise needs to know soon as they will need to pursue other options of Kelce leaves - for example Mike Gesicki, Tyler Conklin and Zach Ertz have been mooted as potential reinforcements.

Whatever happens, it’s clear that the Chiefs are looking further ahead and preparing for life without Kelce who, even if he does stay on, could gradually be eased into a more secondary role for the moment when they will need a permanent replacement.
