The Super Bowl showdown between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs is nearly upon us, with the Eagles favored to clinch the trophy. Scores are expected to be in the 20s and even the 30s, with the much-talked-about matchup between quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts taking centerstage.
Though both sides are expected to go back and forth on the scoreboard, so far, there have been no fearless forecasts about the game reaching record-high tallies.
Offense is key
The strength of the offense has spelled the difference many times in the Super Bowl. 2021′s final between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Kansas City Chiefs was an example of this, as Tom Brady led the Bucs to a 31-9 rout of KC.
That final score was 35 points short of the Super Bowl record. In Super Bowl XXIX which took place in 1995, quarterback Steve Young steered the San Francisco 49ers to a 49-26 victory over the San Diego Chargers at Joe Robbie (now Hard Rock) Stadium in Miami.
The two-time NFL MVP threw for 325 yards and six touchdowns, leading the offense which racked up 14 points in each of the first three quarters.
49ers: Scoring machine
The combined score of 75 is the highest number of points scored in a Super Bowl game, but the 49ers’ final tally of 49 in that match is not the highest in history. This record, however, also belongs to San Francisco. In Super Bowl XXIV held in 1990, the team trounced the Denver Broncos 55-10 at Superdome in New Orleans.
