What did Aaron Rodgers say about a possible move to the San Francisco 49ers

The Green Bay star hasn’t stated his next move, but we do know what he won’t be doing, or rather where he won’t be going.

With the Packers having made it clear that they intend to move on, the focus is now squarely on Aaron Rodgers himself. Will he retire, or will he continue and if so, where will he play? If nothing else, we do know where he won’t.

Aaron Rodgers rules out San Francisco 49ers

Though he recently indicated, that he wouldn’t make a firm decision about his future until after the Super Bowl, Aaron Rodgers has in fact given some insight into where his head is at. Specifically, regarding where he could play next and more over where he definitely won’t, should he decide to return for a 19th season in the NFL. The speculation has of course been given further fuel, by comments from Raiders wide receiver, Davante Adams, who teased on Thursday that Rodgers will soon be relocating to Las Vegas. Rodgers for his part, didn’t exactly address Adams comments, but he did rule out joining the San Francisco 49ers with a joke while speaking at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

“You got any news you wanna share with us?” pro golfer Colt Knost jokingly asked Rodgers while the quarterback prepared for his next hole on the course, at which point the reigning NFL MVP smiled, paused, and then seemingly ruled out the team from the bay.

Davante Adams is stirring the pot

As mentioned above, Adams definitely fanned the flames when he alluded to Rodgers potentially joining the Raiders. Consider for a moment, that Adams and Rodgers played together for many seasons in Green Bay, with the receiver being one of the team’s most productive weapons and one of Rodgers’ favorite targets. Asked recently by a fan on Twitter, which neighborhood Rodgers would be moving to, Adams answered with one single word: “Mine.” What makes the scenario even more plausible, is the fact that Las Vegas’ longtime signal caller, Derek Carr, is snow set to make an exit meaning the Raiders will in fact be in the market for a new quarterback. Rodgers in that regard, makes perfect sense as a trade option.

What’s the QB situation in San Francisco

Though there weren’t any serious reports linking Rodgers with a move to San Francisco, it’s worth noting that the 49ers currently have a rather complicated situation on their hands where the QB is concerned. Firstly, there’s Trey Lance who was designated as the Niners’ starting QB ahead of this past season. Unfortunately, Lance’s campaign was cut short very early on after he broke his ankle, however, he’s due to return very soon. Next up, was former starter Jimmy Garoppolo who has now been officially ruled out after head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that he won’t be rejoining the team. This of course brings us to third string rookie QB, Brock Purdy, who entered the fray after Garoppolo suffered an injury. Purdy literally and metaphorically hit the ground running, eventually leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game where he suffered an injury as the team lost to the Philadelphia Eagles.

This is all to say, that aside from the obvious cap implications, and the fact that both Purdy and Lance are recovering from serious injuries, there really isn’t any room for Rodgers. Yes, the franchise did try to acquire Rodgers before finally drafting Lance back in 2021, but the situation has clearly changed.
