What did Steelers fans chant at Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Matt Canada during Penguins game?

The Pittsburgh Steelers might have are 3-2 going into the weekend, but their fans had a message for offensive coordinator Matt Canada on Tuesday night.

The NHL season started on Monday night, and while the must see game featured Pittsburgh Penguins legend, Sidney Crosby, and No 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, Connor Bedard, it was the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator that many turned their attention to at PPG Paints Arena.

Canada in the crosshairs

The Steelers are currently on top of the AFC North after winning three of their first five games, but if we are being honest, it’s not because of the offense.  The fans watching the Penguins and the Blackhawks bring in the new season made that perfectly clear, breaking out in a “fire Canada” chant.

To the best of our knowledge, Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canada wasn’t in attendance for the opening Puck Night of the season, which appears to be a good decision given the state of the Pittsburgh fans emotions. Canada has found himself in the crosshairs of the Steele City after a dreadful start to the regular season.

What makes the offensive struggles even more painful for those waiving the Terrible Towels, is that there were a lot of expectations for a team that was just a half game away from the playoffs in what was supposed to be a rebuilding season last year.

Last year they could have gotten away with the offense struggling. They had a rookie quarterback and were on the heels of a changing of the guard as Big Ben Roethlisberger called it a career after two decades with the Steelers.

Kenny Pickett didn’t have a perfect rookie season, throwing for just 7 TDs and 9 INTs, but he had a completion percentage of 63% and passed for a modest 2,404 yards. There was a lot of room for improvement, but that improvement was expected to come to fruition this year.

Defense continues to carry the Steelers

Preseason couldn’t have gone any better. Pickett looked sensational, and the offense was rolling with weapons like Najee Harris in the backfield and George Pickens and Allen Robinson II at receiver. With a defense loaded with All Pro talent, the playoffs were and still are a realistic aspiration but it’s going to be almost impossible if the offense can’t score.

Harris has yet to do anything through five games. He has 247 yards on the ground, and had yet to get into the end zone. Pickens has been the gem of this offense with his 393 yards receiving and two TDs, including the game winner last week against the Ravens. That is far from enough for a fan base that is used to contending for Super Bowls, if not winning them.

They are scoring just 15.8 points a game, and totaling 268 yards of offense a game. Of the 79 points the Steelers have scored this season, only 35 come from touchdowns. That’s one touchdown per game.

It’s hard to win in the NFL, and nearly impossible if your offense doesn’t score. Somehow the Steelers are 3-2, but how long can that continue if Pickett and the rest of the crew can’t get into the endzone?

If things don’t turn around, Pittsburgh will start to turn on their team which means Canada’s days in the Steele City might be numbered. Those at Acrisure will hope that it doesn’t come to that, but if the football season goes south, the good news is hockey season has only just begun.
