What NFL records can Derrick Henry and Ravens set vs Buccaneers?

In his first season with the Baltimore Ravens, running back Henry is dazzling in a rushing offense that leads the NFL.

In an era in which the NFL is dominated by speed and agility, Derrick Henry stands out as something of a throwback: a man mountain who has challenged expectations and redefined what it means to be a running back in the US football league. Measuring 6ft 3in and weighing over 240 lbs, Henry is a giant among giants, evoking images of the RBs of yesteryear who dominated the field with brute force and relentless determination.

When the Ravens faced the Washington Commanders in a thrilling game in Week 6 last Sunday, everyone knew what Baltimore’s recipe for success would be: give the ball to Henry, the man they signed in the off season to bolster their offense. With his imposing physique, the 30-year-old has made the destruction of defenses a weekly habit. His powerful arms, allied with his ability to find and exploit the spaces left by defenses, have made him an unstoppable force.

Will Baltimore make NFL history against Tampa Bay?

The Ravens lead the NFL with 1,232 rushing yards this year, and have amassed at least 150 yards and a rushing touchdown in each of their first six games of the regular season. The team’s dominant rushing offense is a testament to the impact Henry has had in Maryland. Indeed, if Baltimore register at least 168 yards in their Monday Night Football clash with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 7, the Ravens will become only the fourth team since 1980 to total 1,400 rushing yards in their first seven games of an NFL campaign.

Thanks to Henry’s stellar displays, moreover, the Ravens are one step away from becoming the first team in the Super Bowl era to register at least 150 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown in each of its first seven games of an NFL season. What’s more, Baltimore can become the first team to achieve these figures in seven consecutive games since the Miami Dolphins in 1973.

Which NFL teams have registered 1,400 rushing yards in first seven games?

Bears19841,508
Falcons20061,476
Ravens20191,429
Ravens20241,232

In the individual stats charts, Henry leads the NFL with 704 rushing yards and eight touchdowns this season, having registered a TD in every game. If he gets another against the Buccaneers, he will be only the sixth player in NFL history - and the first since league great Emmitt Smith in 1994 - to manage a touchdown in each of the opening seven games of the season.

Against the Commanders, Henry ran for two touchdowns - the 25th time in his career that he has scored at least two TDs in a single game. Were he to repeat the feat against Tampa Bay, he would move into fifth in the NFL’s all-time ranking of the most multiple-touchdown games by an individual. In the process, the former Alabama Crimson Tide star would surpass NFL legends such as Marcus Allen, Shaun Alexander and Priest Holmes.

Can Henry reach a century of rushing TDs?

Henry goes into Monday’s game with 98 rushing touchdowns to his name in 125 career NFL appearances. Two more against the Buccaneers would see him overtake Adrian Peterson as the fifth-fastest player to reach 100 rushing TDs. The only players to have brought up a century more in fewer games are Hall of Famers Smith, LaDainian Tomlinson, and Jim Brown, and Shaun Alexander.

In a sport that has evolved to favour lighter, faster players, Henry is a reminder of the days when running backs dominated through power and size. His ability to maintain a consistently high level of performance for seven straight seasons, with at least 10 rushing touchdowns in each, leaves him ahead of all but a few fellow RBs. Only Tomlinson (nine consecutive seasons) and Peterson (seven) have also chalked up this achievement.
