Love him or hate him, it’s difficult to deny that Tom Brady is one of the greatest football players in the history of the sport. After all, one can’t argue with seven Super Bowl trophies (the most by any player) and five Super Bowl MVP awards (again, the most by any player). Brady brought his stellar 23-year career to an end in a 53-second video on Wednesday, claiming that this time is he is “retiring...for good” having previously announced his decision to quit NFL a year earlier before making a swift U-turn.

While it appeared as if records he has set and the awards he won knew no bounds, his entry to the NFL, believe or not, was unceremonious, unmemorable, and gave no indication of the greatness that was to come from the young man from California.

Starting with Michigan

Brady had been a backup quarterback for two years at the University of Michigan and eventually became the starter for two years. He posted decent numbers in Michigan, but both his college career and his NFL Scouting Combine performance apparently did not cause much of a stir among scouts and team managers as he made his way into the pros.

In the 2000 NFL Draft, franchises were not exactly falling all over themselves to acquire the services of Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. The young player was anxiously waiting for the moment his name would be called, and after several rounds in which six other quarterbacks were selected, he ultimately got chosen in the sixth as the 199th pick by the New England Patriots.

He quickly made the Patriots realize that they had made a great investment after starting off as a fourth-string quarterback in the 2000 season. His star quickly ascended and he became a starter on his sophomore year. Brady unstoppably hit his stride in the 2001 season, leading New England to their first-ever Lombardi trophy after winning Super Bowl XXXVI on February 3, 2002.

The young quarterback was named Super Bowl MVP for his efforts, and became the youngest in his position to win the championship. This was his first moment of true glory, but as succeeding years have shown us, it was far from being his last.
