When does the 2024 NFL season start? How long is the offseason?

The Kansas City Chiefs’ overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII has brought the curtain down on the 2023 NFL season, which, confusingly for some, finishes the following year. After a little over five months, Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Co once again emerged victorious, becoming the eighth team to win back-to-back Super Bowls. Their task for the 2024 season will be to become the first in history to make it three in a row.

What next for the NFL?

Expect there to be plenty more coverage of the Chiefs’ win in Las Vegas over the coming days, especially with their victory parade set for Wednesday. Under normal circumstances, there probably wouldn’t be too much made of it being held on Valentine’s Day, but circumstances aren’t quite normal in the age of Kelce and Taylor Swift.

After that, the NFL will take a relative back seat, with the 2024 league year and trading period to begin on Wednesday 13 March, with the 2024 draft following from Thursday 25 April to Saturday 27 April.

When is the 2024 NFL Kickoff Game? Who will play?

Players will generally report for training camps in late July, with three weeks of preseason games following in August, the exact dates of which haven’t yet been revealed by the NFL. Last year, the first week of preseason began on Thursday 8 August, with the third finishing on Saturday 26 August.

We do now know, however, that Super Bowl champions the Chiefs will host the NFL Kickoff Game, the first of the regular season, at Arrowhead Stadium on 5 September, although their opponents have yet to be determined. Last year, the Kansas City franchise were beaten by the Detroit Lions in that particular fixture.

The 2024 regular season will on end on Sunday 5 January 2025, with the playoffs set to start the following weekend. The next Super Bowl (LVIX) to mark on your agendas will be on Sunday 9 February at Caesars Superdome in New Orelaands, which will host a record-extending eighth championship game.
