Update:

The Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys added their names to the record books on September 28, 2025, when their Week 4 clash ended in a 40–40 tie. It was only the second time in league history that a tie featured at least 80 total points, ranking just behind the all-time mark of 86.

What are the top 5 highest scoring NFL ties?

The highest-scoring stalemate remains the Boston Patriots 43–43 Oakland Raiders shootout from October 1964, back in the AFL days. Both teams combined for nine passing touchdowns in a wide-open contest that reflected the league’s wilder, high-scoring era.

The new Packers–Cowboys entry sits second. Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes to Romeo Doubs, while Dak Prescott answered with three of his own. Each side kicked a field goal in overtime, with Green Bay’s coming on the final play to secure the 40–40 draw. Oh, and a certain familiar face was back in town.

Third place on the list came in 1960, when the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos traded blows in a 38–38 AFL game. The two franchises were in their first year of existence, and defensive lapses allowed for one of the league’s most free-flowing scorelines.

In 2014, the Carolina Panthers and Cincinnati Bengals fought to a 37–37 deadlock. Cam Newton piled up 107 rushing yards and threw for 284 more, but Carolina missed a last-second field goal in overtime that would have won it.

Rounding out the top five is a 35–35 tie between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos in September 1974. That game came just before the Steelers’ dynasty years, with Terry Bradshaw and Franco Harris beginning to establish themselves.

The Packers and Cowboys’ thriller now takes its place alongside these rare, high-scoring stalemates, and while some fans don’t like them, they can certainly still produce unforgettable drama.
