Who is Carson Wentz’s backup? This is the Minnesota Vikings’ rookie QB3
Filling in for J.J. McCarthy, Wentz had to leave the game against the Browns, with Max Brosmer up next at quarterback.
The Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback crisis looks set to continue, with Carson Wentz, filling in for injured starter J.J. McCarthy, suffering an apparent shoulder injury in Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns in London. Wentz was forced to leave the field after the injury and was initially announced as questionable to return, although he later reappeared for the second half wearing a harness.
Rookie QB could be next up: who is Max Brosmer?
Next in line is Max Brosmer, an undrafted rookie who signed with the Vikings as a free agent on April 26.
The 24-year-old, born in Iowa and raised in Toronto, Canada, and Georgia, played college football for the New Hampshire Wildcats from 2019 to 2023. His standout season came as a senior, when he led the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), the second-highest level of college football in the U.S., with 3,464 passing yards and 29 touchdowns.
Because of the covid-19 pandemic, Brosmer was granted an additional year of college eligibility and transferred to the Minnesota Golden Gophers for the 2024 season.
Brosmer’s first NFL snaps
He was one of seven undrafted free agents who made the Vikings’ initial 53-man roster for the 2025 NFL season after impressing during preseason.
Brosmer made his NFL debut in Minnesota’s Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, a week after McCarthy sustained his ankle injury. Wentz started, but Brosmer also saw action in the fourth quarter of the 48-10 victory, completing 2 of 4 passes for 29 yards.
