Update:

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been hit by a suspension by the NFL after being found to have violated the league’s Performance Enhancing Substances Policy.

How many games will Garoppolo be suspended for?

According to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 32 year old used a prescribed medication without having a valid Therapeutic Use Exemption, which has led to him being handed a two-game ban, which sources say he will not appeal.

How much will the suspension cost Garoppolo?

As a result, Garoppolo will be forced to sit out the first two weeks of the 2024 season, although it remains to be seen which team he will actually be playing for. The sanction makes it almost certain that he will be released by the Raiders and lose an $11.25 million roster bonus, with NBC Sports additionally reporting a suspension under the NFL’s PES policy is one of the mechanisms for voiding the payment, which would’ve come in the second year of his three-year contract.

The quarterback’s ban will only kick in at the start of the regular season, which Super Bowl LVIII champions the Kansas City Chiefs will get underway in the NFL 2024 Kickoff Game on Thursday 5 September. Garoppolo will be allowed to take part in offseason activities and training camps in the summer.

The former 49ers player won two Super Bowls during his time as backup to Tom Brady at the New England Patriots and moved to the Raiders for the start of the 2023 season after Brock Purdy established himself as the starting quarterback in San Francisco. Garoppolo started six games, and appeared in seven, for Las Vegas but lost his place to Aidan O’Connell when Antonio Pierce became interim head coach at the end of October.
