Why is Amon-Ra St. Brown’s hair blue? The reason why the Lions’ wide receiver dyed his hair
The Detroit Lions face the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game as they look to reach their first ever Super Bowl.
It’s been quite a season for the Detroit Lions and Amon-Ra St. Brown. And it’s a long way from being over yet, with the NFC Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers just a matter of hours away.
St. Brown key to Lions’ resurgence
Wide receiver St. Brown has played a key role in his team’s resurgence, his superb performances earning him a place on the 2023 NFL All-Pro Team and helping the Lions qualify for the NFL postseason for the first time since 2016, when they were heavily beaten by the Seattle Seahawks in the Wild Card playoffs.
Since the 24-year-old was drafted by the Detroit in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the only end-of-season action he had seen had been on television, like most of the rest of us. Not this year, though, as the team that finished 3-13 in NFC North two years ago posted a 12-5 record this time around to finish top of their section.
Blue hair a tribute to Lions
To mark the achievement and his NFL postseason debut, St. Brown opted to dye his hair blue in honour of the team who gave him his big break. And that’s proven to be a good omen so far. The Lions had incredibly lost eight successive Wild Card playoffs between 1993 and 2016 but edged out the Los Angeles Rams at Ford Field, where then they defeated Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Divisional playoffs.
Now they must travel to St. Brown’s home state of California to face the 49ers at Levi’s Stadium, the latest test of his good luck charm. But the wide receiver is not the only one to have had a makeover in the name of the Lions.
Detroit fan gets similar makeover
Larry Benjamin, a lifelong fan of the team who is sadly in in hospice care, has followed suit, which caught the attention on social media of St. Brown, who has sent him a signed jersey. There has rarely been much in the way of glory following the Lions, but maybe that could be about to change.
