Update:

The Philadelphia 76ers will be without their biggest star in a pivotal playoff matchup.

Joel Embiid has officially been ruled out for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the New York Knicks due to ankle and hip injuries.

The decision comes after Embiid was initially listed as probable, raising hopes he would be available. However, increased soreness in both areas ultimately kept him from even participating in shootaround, signaling a late but significant setback.

Why is Joel Embiid out?

Embiid is dealing with multiple injuries, specifically ankle and hip issues, that worsened leading into Game 2.

According to reports, the former MVP had been undergoing around-the-clock treatment in an effort to play. But after experiencing increased discomfort, the 76ers made the call to hold him out rather than risk further aggravation.

This continues a difficult postseason physically for Embiid, who already missed time earlier in the playoffs following an appendectomy before returning in dominant fashion.

How serious is the injury?

At this stage, the exact severity of Embiid’s ankle and hip injuries remains unclear. What is known is that the situation was serious enough to prevent him from practicing, force a late downgrade from probable to out, and raise concerns about his short-term availability in the series.

Given Embiid’s history of playing through injuries, the decision to sit him suggests the Sixers are being cautious, or that the discomfort reached a point where playing was no longer realistic.

When will Joel Embiid return?

There is no official timeline yet for Embiid’s return. However, his status for Game 3 will likely depend on how his ankle and hip respond to treatment over the next 48–72 hours, whether he can return to on-court activity without pain, and the urgency of the series situation against New York.

If the injuries are primarily soreness-related, a quick return is possible. But if there’s any structural concern, the timeline could extend further into the series.

What this means for the 76ers

The timing couldn’t be worse for Philadelphia. The Sixers enter Game 2 already trailing in the series after a blowout loss in Game 1 at Madison Square Garden. Without Embiid, they lose their offensive centerpiece and defensive anchor in a must-win situation.

That said, Embiid showed just how impactful he can be when healthy. After returning in the first round, he averaged 28 points, 9 rebounds, and 7 assists over the final four games, helping lead Philadelphia to a dramatic comeback series win. Replacing that level of production is nearly impossible.
